For the most direct route through the modern DOOM story, play DOOM (2016) next, followed by DOOM Eternal. Bethesda describes DOOM: The Dark Ages as a prequel to both, so this order moves from the prequel into the modern games’ release sequence. If you mainly want another recent, fast-paced DOOM game, you can jump straight to Eternal instead.
Which DOOM game should you play next?
Choose DOOM (2016) if you want to continue with the modern series in release order; then play DOOM Eternal. Bethesda’s Steam description calls The Dark Ages “the prequel to the critically acclaimed DOOM (2016) and DOOM Eternal.” Bethesda Softworks’ Steam listing also gives The Dark Ages’ release date as May 14, 2025.
That order is a recommendation, not a requirement. You can play Eternal immediately if its newer combat is what you want, or step back to the classics for a different style of DOOM.
Pick a DOOM path that fits what you want

Start with DOOM (2016) for the modern arc
DOOM (2016) is the clearest next choice if you want to move from The Dark Ages into the modern games in release order. It leads into DOOM Eternal, the other game explicitly named in the prequel description. Playing the pair this way is a straightforward path through the modern entries, without treating the prequel’s placement as a rule that limits your choices.

Choose DOOM Eternal if you want more modern combat now
DOOM Eternal is the other modern entry named alongside DOOM (2016) in Bethesda’s description of The Dark Ages. It is a reasonable direct jump if you are prioritizing another modern DOOM experience over release order. If you want the modern pair in sequence, play DOOM (2016) first.
Try DOOM + DOOM II for the classic games
For the original-era games, look for the official DOOM + DOOM II release. Bethesda’s page identifies it as a combined release of DOOM and DOOM II and calls out Legacy of Rust as a new episode. Bethesda describes it as “the newest episode for DOOM, and the first official episode since DOOM II to feature new demons and weapons.” See Bethesda’s DOOM + DOOM II page for its platform and store categories.

The page lists Xbox, PC, Steam, PlayStation, Epic Games, GOG, and Nintendo Switch categories, but that does not guarantee the game is currently sold in every country or on every storefront. Check the store for your platform and region before buying.
Explore DOOM 64 or DOOM 3 as separate branches
DOOM 64
DOOM 64 is a classic-era alternative if you want to explore beyond the modern pair. Bethesda includes it in the games named on the DOOM Anthology listing.

DOOM 3
DOOM 3 is another franchise entry outside the modern pair. It is also among the titles in Bethesda’s DOOM Anthology. Pick either game when a change of direction interests you more than following the modern sequence.

Bethesda’s Gear Store describes DOOM Anthology as a physical collection containing DOOM (1993), DOOM II, DOOM 64, DOOM 3, DOOM (2016), and DOOM Eternal Deluxe Edition. The listing also includes a SteelBook case and five-inch BFG replica. Bethesda notes that features and availability may vary by region, so check the listing for your location rather than assuming the same edition is sold everywhere: Bethesda Gear Store’s DOOM Anthology listing.

Digital bundle contents and availability can differ from the physical collection. Bethesda Support says that from September 14, 2026, the Steam DOOM Anthology bundle is updated to include DOOM: The Dark Ages Premium Edition. The same notice says owners of the Xbox One and PlayStation 4 Anthology versions can continue to download and play what they purchased, although the prior-generation bundle is no longer listed in digital storefronts. These details apply to the editions and storefronts named in Bethesda Support’s Anthology notice; they should not be taken as a promise that other stores or regions offer the same bundle.
