Start with the series’ official credits, then follow the credited person—not just the word “creator”—to an official portfolio or studio profile. A person may have originated a series, directed it, written it, or contributed a specific design; those roles point to different kinds of connections in their other work.
First, identify which creator you mean
Check the anime or game’s official staff page, end credits, or release materials and note the person’s exact credit. “Creator” is not a standardized production role. In anime, a name associated with a series might be credited for original work, direction, series composition, writing, character design, or mechanical design. These contributions are not interchangeable, and a shared name alone does not establish that another title will resemble your favorite.
The Japan Agency for Cultural Affairs’ guide to animation discusses contributions to The Super Dimension Fortress Macross separately, including Shoji Kawamori’s Valkyrie design and Noboru Ishiguro’s direction. That distinction is a useful reminder to look for the job attached to the name, not just the name itself: Agency for Cultural Affairs animation guide.
Trace the credit through official sources
- Record the exact name and role. Use the official title site, staff credits, end credits, or official release materials. If several people are credited, choose the one whose contribution interests you.
- Find an official portfolio or profile. Search the name with a phrase such as “official works” or “filmography,” or include the studio or production company. Prefer the creator’s own site, a studio biography, or a rights-holder or distributor page.
- Browse by medium and role. Separate anime, films, games, design work, and publications where the portfolio does so. Note whether the person is credited as original creator, director, writer, designer, or in another capacity.
- Verify each candidate title. Open its official page or release materials and confirm the specific credit. A portfolio can document participation without implying sole authorship.
- Compare the work on more than its shared name. Consider the person’s role, the format, genre and tone, and whether the title is available in your region. Credits establish a connection; they do not prove that the experience will feel similar.
Examples: following Shoji Kawamori across anime and games
Kawamori’s official portfolio groups work by medium and identifies his roles. It lists him as original creator and director for The Super Dimension Fortress Macross and Genesis of Aquarion. Other anime entries credit him for mechanical design, a different contribution: Shoji Kawamori’s official works portfolio.

The same portfolio connects his design work to games. It lists DAEMON X MACHINA with mechanical concept design and Devil May Cry 5 with Devil Breaker design. Those credits make the games relevant to someone exploring Kawamori’s work, but they do not mean he directed either game or created its entire story.
Example: a writer and director with anime and game credits
Contrail’s official profile for Sunao Katabuchi lists anime work including Black Lagoon and game credits for the Ace Combat series: director and writer on Ace Combat 04: Shattered Skies, writer on Ace Combat 5: The Unsung War, and writer on Ace Combat 7: Skies Unknown. The credits show a substantial connection across media, while also distinguishing his game roles from his anime work: Contrail’s Sunao Katabuchi profile.

Compare candidates without overstating the connection
Once you have two or more candidates, organize what you have verified before choosing what to try. Put the credited role first: it tells you most directly how the person contributed.

What a shared creator can—and cannot—tell you
- A person credited as original creator or director may offer a different kind of connection than someone credited for one design element.
- A design credit can still be a meaningful reason to explore a game or anime, but it does not establish authorship of the whole work.
- Anime and games are collaborative productions. Multiple people contribute, and official profiles may not publish every credit.
- A work by someone connected to your favorite may differ in genre, tone, format, and audience. Treat the credit as a discovery trail, then decide based on the work itself.
