Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallFor a smoother Steam Remote Play stream, improve the network path first: connect the host PC to the router with Ethernet, or use strong 5 GHz Wi-Fi if wiring is impractical. Then use Steam’s performance overlay to find network-time spikes, try a speed-focused quality preset if the connection is unstable, and adjust bandwidth and resolution in small steps. There is no single best setting for every network, GPU and client.
Start with the network, not the picture
Steam recommends a wired connection for the host computer. Ethernet avoids wireless interference on that part of the connection; it will not, by itself, fix encoding or controller-input delay. Steam’s Remote Play guidance recommends a wired network for the best streaming experience.
If you cannot wire the host, try 5 GHz Wi-Fi with a strong signal. Steam notes that 5 GHz is generally less congested than 2.4 GHz, but has shorter range, so a weak signal may undermine the benefit. Pause downloads and other traffic competing for the connection. If the router is the apparent source of network trouble, Steam also suggests updating its firmware.
Use the performance overlay to identify instability
Turn on the Remote Play performance overlay in the advanced streaming settings and watch the network-time line. Steam describes large spikes in the cyan line as a sign of highly variable network time, often associated with stutter or freezing. Treat this as a diagnostic clue rather than proof: a delay may have another cause, including the host’s encoding workload or client decoding compatibility. See Steam Link’s suggested network settings for Steam’s overlay guidance.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Choose a speed-oriented quality preset only if needed
Steam’s speed-versus-quality preference offers a direct trade-off. Steam says Balanced or Fast reduces bandwidth use at the cost of visual quality; the Steam Link connectivity guide specifically recommends trying Fast to reduce network bandwidth. A faster preset is therefore a reasonable test when the overlay and symptoms point to a network constraint, not a free improvement to latency in every setup.
Find a stable bandwidth limit
Use the bandwidth limit as a tuning control, not a universal target. Steam’s network guide suggests starting at 3 Mbit/s, then increasing gradually until hitches appear and backing down to the last stable setting. That is an operational starting instruction, not a measured optimum or a promise that 3 Mbit/s will suit every game, resolution or network. Steam’s Steam Link network/connectivity instructions describe the same low-to-high tuning approach and say Automatic restores the default behavior.

Lower resolution only as far as the stream requires
Steam exposes a maximum capture resolution in Remote Play settings. If the stream still struggles after the network and bandwidth checks, reduce that limit one step at a time and keep the highest resolution that remains stable. Steam’s low-framerate troubleshooting page suggests 1280×720 as one test for a struggling stream; it is not a required setting. Lowering the game’s own resolution may also help in some cases, but reduces detail. The capture-resolution control and related advice appear in Steam’s Remote Play FAQ and low-framerate troubleshooting.
Test encoding and decoding against your hardware
Host hardware encoding and client hardware decoding are system-dependent. Steam says host hardware encoding may improve results depending on the graphics card, while its FAQ recommends enabling client hardware decoding or disabling host hardware encoding for certain NVIDIA-related display incompatibilities. Change one option at a time, then check the stream and available performance details to see whether the change helped. Avoid treating an older GPU ranking or a codec setting as universal advice.

Use traffic prioritization only when congestion is the problem
If other devices or applications are competing for capacity, Steam suggests prioritizing both the host and client in the router’s QoS or bandwidth-priority settings. Steam also provides a Remote Play network-prioritization option under Steam > Settings > Remote Play > Advanced Host Options. Menu labels can vary between Steam client and Steam Link versions; older Steam Link support pages may show legacy “In-Home Streaming” paths. Prioritization cannot create additional bandwidth, so focus on it when congestion is present.

A practical tuning sequence
- Connect the host PC to the router by Ethernet, or use strong 5 GHz Wi-Fi and reduce competing traffic.
- Enable the Remote Play performance overlay and look for variable network-time spikes while streaming.
- If network instability is evident, test Balanced or Fast and note the visual-quality trade-off.
- Start with a low bandwidth limit, raise it until hitches occur, then return to the last stable setting. Use Automatic to restore the default behavior.
- If necessary, reduce the maximum capture resolution gradually; consider 1280×720 as a troubleshooting test rather than a default.
- Test host encoding and client decoding options one at a time, especially if you see a display-compatibility problem.
- Consider router QoS or Steam’s network-prioritization setting only if competing traffic is causing congestion.
