How to Set Up Steam Remote Play for a Balance of Image Quality and Latency

Connect the host PC by Ethernet where possible, then tune resolution and bandwidth gradually while using Steam’s performance overlay to diagnose stutter.

For the smoothest Steam Remote Play stream, connect the host PC to your router with Ethernet, then tune the client’s resolution and bandwidth cap while a game is running. Use Steam’s performance overlay to distinguish network instability from slow encoding or decoding; there is no single setting that works best for every game, device, and home network.

Set up Remote Play and confirm the basics

  1. On the host PC: Open Steam, sign in, and enable Remote Play in Steam’s Remote Play settings. Keep the computer awake and connected to your home network.
  2. On the client: Use the Steam client, Steam Link app, or Steam Link device, then follow its pairing or discovery prompts to connect to the host. For Steam Link hardware, Steam’s setup flow is to connect it to a display and home network, attach an input device, find the computer running Steam, and start streaming. Client interfaces vary, so menu wording is not identical everywhere.
  3. Start a game: Check that video, sound, and controller input all work before changing quality settings. If Steam does not recognize the controller, check controller settings in Steam Big Picture.
  4. Open the streaming performance overlay on the client: Watch the network timing and encoder/decoder information while playing. Steam says large spikes in the cyan network-time line indicate highly variable network timing and usually accompany stutter or freezing.

Stabilize the network first

Steam recommends connecting the host computer directly to the router with Ethernet. Wireless traffic between devices and the router can interfere with itself, while wired networking avoids that particular source of instability. Steam’s advice is: “We highly recommend making sure your computer is directly connected to the router with Ethernet.” A standard Ethernet cable may be sufficient if its length suits the room; buying new network hardware is not automatically necessary.

If the client must use Wi-Fi

  • Try 5 GHz instead of a congested 2.4 GHz network when the client has a strong enough signal. Steam notes that 5 GHz has shorter range, so distance and obstructions matter.
  • Reduce distance from the router, avoid obstructions where practical, and choose a less-congested Wi-Fi channel.
  • Pause large downloads or other streams while testing, since competing traffic can contribute to inconsistent timing.
  • Steam’s published support guidance recommends an 802.11ac router, or 802.11n on 5 GHz as a next-best option. This is support guidance, not a guarantee of performance on every current network.

If both host and client are wireless

Steam advises avoiding this arrangement where possible: stream traffic has to cross the wireless network twice. If only one device can be wired, wire at least the host PC or the Steam Link client; Steam recommends wiring the host when practical.

Choose a sustainable resolution

Higher resolution can show more detail, but it also increases work for the host, client, and network. If the stream’s framerate is low, Steam’s troubleshooting guidance suggests testing 1280×720 (720p) and, if needed, lowering the game’s own display resolution. Treat 720p as a diagnostic setting, not a universal recommendation or a required final resolution.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Once a resolution plays smoothly, raise it and observe the overlay and gameplay. If framerate falls or stutter begins, lower it again; use the overlay to check whether network timing or encoding and decoding appears to be the limiting factor.

Find a stable bandwidth cap

Steam’s network settings guidance suggests starting at 3 Mbit/s and gradually increasing the bandwidth cap until hitches appear, then stepping back. Its Steam Link troubleshooting guidance similarly recommends starting at the lowest available limit and increasing until problems occur; in the documented Link interface, Automatic restores default behavior. The 3 Mbit/s figure is a tuning starting point, not a universal target or a benchmark for any particular resolution.

Where the client allows it, adjust the cap while a game is running so you can see the effect immediately. If network-time spikes appear, first reduce competing traffic or lower the cap before trying to increase image quality again.

Test host encoding and client decoding

Steam says changing whether hardware encoding is enabled can improve quality depending on the GPU. Compare the available host setting while playing, and check the overlay’s encoder and decoder details alongside framerate and visible artifacts. Neither hardware encoding nor software encoding is always the better choice across all host and client combinations.

Steam documents two specific NVIDIA-related compatibility issues: hardware encoding with a software decoder may cause persistent smearing, while hardware encoding with the macOS hardware decoder may produce blocky color areas. For those symptoms, Steam’s documented remedies are to test hardware decoding on the client or disable host hardware encoding, as appropriate. These are specific troubleshooting cases, not general limitations of NVIDIA hardware encoding.

Troubleshoot by symptom

What you notice What to check or try
Stutter or freezing with spikes in the overlay’s network-time line Check Wi-Fi interference, distance and obstructions, and other network traffic. Wire the host if possible, then try a lower bandwidth cap.
Low stream framerate without obvious network spikes Lower the stream resolution and, if necessary, the game’s display resolution. Test the host’s hardware-encoding setting and use the overlay to inspect encoder/decoder details.
Host and Steam Link are both on Wi-Fi Wire at least one of them to the router if possible, preferably the host PC.
Client cannot find the host Check that Steam is running on the host, that the firewall permits the connection, and that client isolation is disabled. Steam lists UDP ports 27031 and 27036 and TCP ports 27036 and 27037 for Remote Play. Do not expose ports indiscriminately; use your router and firewall documentation to make any local-network changes.
Smearing or blocky color with NVIDIA encoding For the documented compatibility cases, test hardware decoding on the client or disable hardware encoding on the host, as appropriate to the symptom.
Need to restore Steam Link streaming options Steam’s Link troubleshooting guide documents resetting advanced streaming options to defaults in the beta build. Availability of this setting can vary.

Adjust one setting at a time

For a useful comparison, change one variable, play the same portion of a game, and observe both the picture and the overlay. A higher resolution or bandwidth cap is worthwhile only if the stream remains responsive and stable on your particular host, client, and network.
