His kit slows and pressures enemies, weakens their Bullet Resist, and helps him hold a frontline position with a health-based barrier. For a first match, play near teammates, use your abilities to start or support a coordinated fight, and treat any item path as a starting point—not a proven best build.
Rat King’s abilities
Rat King’s abilities combine area pressure, damage over time, personal defense, and team support. The exact values can change with patches; the figures below are values listed in a guide published October 3, 2026, shortly after Rat King’s reported October 2 playable release. Check the in-game ability descriptions for current values.
1. Scrap Grenade
Throw a scrap grenade to make it detonate repeatedly, dealing bullet damage and slowing enemies in the area. Opponents can knock the grenade away with a melee hit, so avoid relying on it as a guaranteed hit. The October 3 guide lists 65 base damage per detonation, three detonations, an 8 m radius, a 20% movement slow, and a 26-second cooldown. Its third-tier upgrade adds a larger final detonation, according to the patch notes.
2. Rat Swarm
Send rats onto enemies to deal spirit damage over time and reduce their Bullet Resist with each bite. More attached rats bite faster, increasing the pressure while they remain attached. An enemy can remove one with a ground or air dash. The October 3 guide lists 8 damage per bite, a 1% Bullet Resist reduction per bite, a one-second bite interval, and up to five attached rats.

3. Royal Pestments
Gain a barrier based on Rat King’s maximum health. While it holds, bullets have a chance to return toward their attackers. The patch notes specify that the barrier does not benefit from resists, so do not assume defensive resistances increase its protection. The October 3 guide lists a base barrier equal to 15% of maximum health and a 15% bullet-return chance.
4. Rule, Ratannia!
Charge and plant a banner. Nearby allies gain movement speed, slow immunity, and reduced incoming damage; the eruption damages and knocks enemies into the air, slows them, and sends rats that apply Rat Swarm. The October 3 guide lists a 24 m radius, a 12-second flag duration, 20% damage reduction, and a 130-second cooldown. Patch summaries differ in how they describe the banner’s effects, so use the current in-game text for exact effects and duration.
How to play Rat King as a beginner
Think of Rat King as a frontline brawler who is most useful close enough to affect a fight alongside allies. His abilities create opportunities and add pressure; the descriptions alone do not establish that any particular combo is optimal.

- Approach with teammates. Stay near allies so you can contribute pressure without committing alone, and so the team can benefit from your ultimate’s nearby effects.
- Use Scrap Grenade to shape the fight. Throw it where it can threaten a group, slow a route, or make a target’s movement harder. Keep in mind that a melee hit can knock it away.
- Apply Rat Swarm for sustained pressure. Use it on enemies you can keep pressuring. Its Bullet Resist reduction can support follow-up bullet damage, while dashes can help enemies remove attached rats.
- Time Royal Pestments around incoming bullets. Activate the barrier as you commit into bullet fire. Its protection is health-based, and the barrier itself does not gain resist benefits.
- Place Rule, Ratannia! where the fight can stay near the banner. Look for a moment when allies can use its support and enemies can be caught by the eruption. The listed 12-second duration is a guide-reported value, not a guarantee for later patches.
A beginner build: start with the in-game browser
There is no verified optimal beginner purchase order established here. Rat King’s hero page currently shows no popular item builds, and the available build reference explains Valve’s default-build format without supplying a supported Rat King beginner sequence. A specific ordered shopping list would therefore be speculation, not a proven build.
Open the current in-game build browser and review the builds available for Rat King. Use one as a starting reference, then adjust purchases to the match and to the ability timing you are learning. Treat any community or personal sequence as provisional, and check that it still makes sense under the current patch.

The October 2, 2026 patch notes classify Rat King as a Brawler and report 800 base health, 6.8 maximum move speed, 0.263 stamina regeneration per second, and the Sovereign’s Decree weapon. They also describe changes from prerelease values, including reduced Spirit and Bullet Lifesteal effectiveness. These are launch-patch figures and may not match a later version.
