For Nintendo Switch 2, choose a card explicitly labeled microSD Express—a regular microSD, microSDHC, or microSDXC card from the original Switch will not expand game storage. Nintendo supports microSD Express cards up to 2TB. Pick capacity for the games and add-ons you want installed, then compare price, warranty, and manufacturer speed claims without assuming those claims predict Switch 2 load times.
Which microSD cards work with Nintendo Switch 2?
Nintendo Switch 2 is compatible only with microSD Express cards. Check the packaging or product listing for the words “microSD Express” or the EX mark, and confirm the specific listing names Switch 2 compatibility. A high UHS speed class or a familiar gaming brand is not enough to establish compatibility. See Nintendo’s compatibility guide.
A standard microSD, microSDHC, or microSDXC card used in the original Switch cannot store or load Switch 2 games or save data. Nintendo does allow an old standard card to be used to import captured screenshots and videos into Switch 2 system memory; it does not become expanded storage for the new console.
What can you store on the card?
A microSD Express card can hold downloaded games, software updates, DLC, screenshots, and videos. Game save data is different: it stays in the console’s system memory and cannot be copied or saved to the card. Nintendo’s microSD Express FAQ explains the storage distinction.

Nintendo supports cards up to 2TB, and the card is sold separately. Choose capacity according to how much downloadable software and DLC you want installed at once. Game sizes vary, manufacturer game-count estimates are only rough guides, and usable space is lower than a card’s nominal capacity. Leave room for updates and future downloads.
How to compare Switch 2 microSD Express cards
Capacity and product identity
First compare capacities that fit your library and budget; then check the exact product name and listing. A general microSD Express product line is not automatically a Switch 2-specific or licensed product. Verify the SKU and explicit compatibility on the listing before buying.

Published speed claims
Manufacturers publish maximum speeds measured under their own conditions and with capable hosts. SanDisk’s Switch 2-specific sheet claims up to 880MB/s read speed. Samsung’s 256GB Switch 2 card sheet claims up to 800MB/s Express sequential read speed. These are different manufacturers’ specifications, not a controlled head-to-head test on Switch 2. A higher advertised figure does not establish proportionally faster game loading on the console.

Speed figures are manufacturer claims, not independent Switch 2 test results. SanDisk says actual performance depends on the host, interface, usage conditions, and other factors; Samsung also notes that performance varies by environment. Warranty terms can depend on region. Warranty and buying source
Check the warranty terms that apply in your region and buy from a seller whose listing clearly identifies the card and capacity. Do not rely on a product-family name alone: confirm the exact card is microSD Express and, where relevant, that the listing explicitly specifies Switch 2 compatibility.
Why it is simpler to use one card
Nintendo recommends using one microSD Express card. Software stored across multiple cards cannot later be combined into one library simply by swapping cards. If you need more room, Nintendo provides instructions for copying data to a larger replacement card; follow those instructions rather than treating multiple cards as one expandable pool. Set up a card or troubleshoot recognition
Nintendo says an internet system update is required the first time a microSD Express card is used. The setup requirement may change with console software updates, so follow the current on-console prompt or Nintendo Support guidance if the menu differs.

- Confirm the card is microSD Express, not standard microSD, microSDHC, or microSDXC.
- If the console does not recognize it, check the card contacts and the console’s card slot for dirt or debris, following Nintendo’s troubleshooting guidance.
