Xbox Series X is not shown to have lower ping than Xbox Series S. Microsoft lists the same dual-band 802.11ac Wi-Fi and 1Gbps Ethernet on both consoles, and the official specifications do not establish a head-to-head latency advantage. Series X does offer more graphics and resolution headroom, but that is a separate question from the quality of your network connection.

Does Xbox Series X have better ping than Series S?

There is no evidence in the official specifications that Series X inherently delivers lower ping. Xbox lists dual-band 802.11ac Wi-Fi and 1Gbps Ethernet for both consoles in its console comparison. The reviewed sources do not provide a controlled Series X-versus-Series S ping benchmark, so a specific latency difference cannot be claimed.

Ping is the time it takes data to travel between your console and a game server and back. It is affected by factors such as your internet connection, router, network congestion, distance to the server, and the game’s networking. A more powerful console does not, by itself, show that those factors will produce a lower ping.

Network performance and game performance are different

Series X has greater graphics and resolution headroom, while Series S may run a game at a lower resolution or with different settings. The exact difference depends on the title and its available modes. A smoother or sharper picture can affect how play feels, but it is not proof of lower network latency.

  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Both consoles are listed as capable of up to 120 FPS. That is a maximum capability, not a promise that every multiplayer game offers a 120-FPS mode on either console. The game must support the mode, and the display must be suitable for the output. Xbox’s comparison page and Microsoft Store’s Series S product page describe the capability; check the current support information for the particular game you play.

What a game-specific example can—and cannot—tell you

In its 2020 launch announcement, Xbox Wire said Gears 5 supported 120 frames per second in its Versus multiplayer mode on Series X|S, while separately describing 4K HDR visuals for Series X. That is a dated example of a particular game’s implementation, not evidence that all current multiplayer games run at 120 FPS on both consoles or that the consoles have equal performance in every title. Which console should you choose for multiplayer?

What matters to you Series X Series S
Listed network connections Dual-band 802.11ac Wi-Fi and 1Gbps Ethernet Dual-band 802.11ac Wi-Fi and 1Gbps Ethernet
Maximum listed frame-rate capability Up to 120 FPS, where the game and display support it Up to 120 FPS, where the game and display support it
Graphics and resolution More graphics and resolution headroom; results vary by game Lower-resolution positioning and potentially different game settings; results vary by game
Disc games Some Series X configurations include a disc drive Digital-only

Choose Series X if the resolution, visual options, or game-specific performance modes matter enough to justify its higher-performance positioning. Choose Series S if you prefer a compact, digital-only console and its performance in the multiplayer games you play meets your needs. For either model, check the individual game’s current modes rather than assuming a universal frame-rate difference. Microsoft’s console certification requirements address support across a console generation’s family, but they do not guarantee identical modes or performance between models.

Will using Ethernet help?

Both consoles have gigabit Ethernet, so choosing a wired connection is not a Series X-exclusive advantage. If your console is currently on Wi-Fi, trying Ethernet can help you determine whether your local wireless connection is contributing to instability; it is not a guaranteed ping fix. Xbox lists Ethernet and Wi-Fi for both models in its official comparison.
