AI super-resolution reconstructs a higher-resolution image from a game frame rendered at a lower resolution. On PlayStation, the names depend on the console: PS5 Pro games can use PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR), while Sony announced Quick Spectral Super Resolution (QSSR) for supported games on standard PS5 on October 1, 2026. Neither feature makes every game render natively at 4K; results depend on the game and its settings.
What AI super-resolution does in a PS5 game
A game first renders an image at an internal resolution. An upscaler then analyzes that input and reconstructs an image for a higher-resolution output, rather than having the game calculate every output pixel directly. Sony describes PSSR as an AI library that analyzes game images pixel by pixel as it upscales them. For a straightforward example of the process, Ubisoft describes taking a 1080p-rendered image and upscaling toward 2160p; that illustrates the technique, not a resolution specification for every PS5 game.
AI upscaling is one rendering technique chosen and configured by a game developer. It is not a system-wide switch that converts all PS5 content into native 4K. The input resolution, output target, image reconstruction, frame-rate goals, and available graphics options can differ from game to game. Sony’s PSSR announcement and Ubisoft’s explanation of upscaling in Assassin’s Creed Shadows describe the approach and its tradeoffs.
What PSSR and QSSR mean—and which PS5 supports them
PSSR and QSSR are related PlayStation upscaling technologies, but they are not interchangeable names for a feature available on every console. Sony positions PSSR as the higher-tier AI upscaler for PS5 Pro. In its October 1, 2026 announcement, Sony introduced QSSR as a streamlined, performance-oriented implementation for supported games on standard PS5. Sony said QSSR’s first named games would be Marvel’s Wolverine and Ghost of Yōtei, with QSSR offered as an additional graphics option. Support can expand as games receive updates. Sony’s QSSR announcement describes the distinction.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
On February 27, 2026, Sony said PSSR had been used in more than 50 PS5 Pro titles “to date.” That is a figure for the date of that announcement, not a current library count. Sony also announced an upgraded PSSR in February 2026, followed by a broad system-software rollout in March. The February announcement and the March rollout announcement cover those updates.
How upscaling can improve image quality or performance
More stable detail
A well-integrated upscaler can make fine details appear clearer and help reduce shimmering or flicker, particularly around thin geometry, hair, fabric, foliage, or moving objects. Sony and developers describe these as intended or observed image-quality benefits, not guaranteed results for every game. For example, IO Interactive said upgraded PSSR in 007 First Light improved clarity and stability, including on fine detail. That is the developer’s account of that title, not an independent benchmark or a library-wide guarantee. IO Interactive’s explanation gives the game-specific context.

More room to balance resolution and frame rate
Rendering fewer pixels internally can free resources for frame rate or other visual effects. Developers may also use dynamic resolution scaling, lowering the input resolution during demanding moments. The upscaler then reconstructs the image toward the chosen output. Ubisoft describes the tradeoff plainly: lower render resolution can help frame rate, but may cost image clarity and sometimes introduce visual artifacts. The actual balance is set by each game’s implementation and graphics options; upscaling does not automatically raise frame rate.
What it does not guarantee
- Native rendering at the output resolution: a game that reconstructs an image toward 4K has not necessarily rendered every pixel at native 4K.
- A universal frame-rate increase: the developer may use the headroom for a steadier frame rate, higher detail, or another balance of settings.
- Artifact-free results: the input image, reconstruction method, game integration, and selected settings affect the outcome.
Game-specific modes and controls
Developers decide how to use the technology, so support and controls vary. A game may enable its upscaler through a graphics mode or expose additional options in its own menus. On PS5 Pro, Sony’s optional system setting, “Enhance PSSR Image Quality,” applies to games that already support PSSR; it does not add PSSR support to unsupported titles. Sony says results vary by game and advises users to turn the setting off if unexpected visual effects appear. The March 2026 rollout announcement explains the system setting and supported-game context.

One concrete example of a game-specific target came from Sony’s 2024 developer announcement: The Last of Us Part I and The Last of Us Part II Remastered were to have a PS5 Pro mode rendering at 1440p and upscaling to 4K via PSSR while targeting 60 fps. Those figures describe the announced mode for those named games, not a general PSSR promise. Sony’s developer feature details that example.

- Internal and output resolution: what resolution the game renders before reconstruction and what image it sends to the display.
- Fine detail and stability: whether thin objects, foliage, hair, and moving edges look clear or shimmer.
- Frame rate and other settings: whether the game prioritizes performance, image quality, or additional effects.
- Support and controls: whether the title supports PSSR or QSSR, whether it is enabled by default, and whether a game-level or system-level option changes its behavior.
The useful comparison is the image and performance in a particular game mode—not the technology’s name alone. Sony’s and developers’ descriptions explain intended benefits, but they do not establish a universal image-quality or frame-rate uplift across games.
