Your options depend on the storefront and country, what you bought, how long the delay is, and whether included content has already begun downloading or streaming. Steam, Epic, PlayStation, and Nintendo describe different rules, so start with the store and region on your receipt.
First, identify what you bought and where
Before requesting a cancellation, check the purchase receipt and the store account used to pay. A platform’s policy may vary by country, and applicable consumer law can provide rights beyond the store’s standard terms.
Then identify the purchase type. A standalone DLC preorder, a game preorder that includes a bonus entitlement, and a season pass are not interchangeable. For example, Steam’s cited policy specifically covers season passes, while PlayStation separately lists games, add-ons, and season passes.
- Write down the original release window and the revised date, if one was announced.
- Check whether the publisher has cancelled the DLC, delayed it to a new date, or left the release date unknown.
- Check whether any included item has started downloading or streaming.
- Keep the order confirmation and delay or cancellation notices.

Steam: season-pass rules are specific
Steamworks describes a season pass as a DLC pre-purchase and requires clear descriptions and release windows. Its guidance says a developer may reschedule a season-pass DLC release date once, by up to three months.

If a season-pass DLC is cancelled
Valve says customers will be offered a refund for the value of the unreleased DLC. That statement concerns the value of the unreleased content; it should not be read as an automatic promise to refund the entire pass.
If the release is delayed
Valve says it may take action if a DLC is delayed more than a quarter (three months) beyond the release window originally promised. Possible actions include removing the pass from sale, refunding the value of unreleased DLC, or allowing a refund of the whole pass. Valve also says it may act if season-pass content remains unreleased after one year. These are actions Valve says it may take, not a guarantee that every buyer automatically receives a whole-pass refund once a threshold is reached.

PlayStation Store: US cancellation depends on timing and downloads
For the United States, PlayStation’s cancellation policy generally allows a season pass to be cancelled within 14 days of purchase. If downloading or streaming any included digital item has started, the ordinary cancellation option is no longer available unless the item is faulty. The policy applies a similar download-or-streaming condition to games and add-ons.

This is a purchase-cancellation policy; it does not say that a release delay by itself guarantees a refund. PlayStation notes that local law may provide additional rights. Check the US PlayStation Store cancellation policy.
Epic Games Store: the stated cases depend on the length and certainty of the delay
Epic’s support guidance describes two specific situations for a pre-purchased game:

- Indefinite delay: If the release date is unknown, Epic says the purchase is automatically fully refunded.
- Planned date delayed by less than 30 days: Epic says it notifies the customer of the new date and offers an opportunity to cancel.
Those statements do not establish what happens for every other delay length. Consult Epic’s guidance on delayed pre-purchases for the current support details.

Nintendo UK’s FAQ explains that selected games and DLC can be preordered and preloaded, with an update unlocking content on release day. That describes how those preorders work; it does not establish a general refund right. See Nintendo UK’s preorder FAQ.
How to make a refund request
- Confirm the seller and region. Use the receipt to identify the storefront and the country or region attached to the transaction.
- Classify the purchase. Note whether it was a standalone DLC preorder, a season pass, or a game preorder with DLC entitlements.
- Capture the timeline. Save the original release window, any revised date, and any message saying the content is cancelled or delayed indefinitely.
- Check download status. For PlayStation in particular, determine whether any included content has started downloading or streaming.
- Contact that storefront’s support. State the purchase date, product, region, release promise, and what changed. Ask whether the request is being handled under the store’s cancellation policy or another applicable right.
- Check local consumer rules separately. Store policy does not settle whether additional statutory rights apply in your jurisdiction.
What a delay does—and does not—mean for buyers
A changed release date, a cancelled DLC item, and an indefinite delay are different events. Storefronts may treat them differently, and the cited policies do not establish one shared industry rule. Nor do they establish a universal refund right for every standalone DLC preorder or every game preorder that includes DLC. Use the policy for the specific store and country, and do not assume that a rule about season passes automatically applies to another purchase type.
