Yes—Nintendo Switch 2 plays many original Nintendo Switch games, both physical and digital, but not every game is guaranteed to work fully. Insert a compatible Switch game card, or access eligible digital purchases through the Nintendo Account that owns them. For a specific title, check its current Nintendo product page or eShop listing: compatibility exceptions can involve unsupported software, reduced functionality, or a need for original Joy-Con controllers.
How to check whether a particular Switch game works
Nintendo publishes title-level compatibility information, but its detailed compatibility list is marked as current as of June 5, 2025. Nintendo says testing is limited and status can change as issues are found or addressed, so treat that dated list as a guide rather than a definitive 2026 inventory. Check the individual game’s Nintendo product page or eShop status before relying on it. Nintendo’s Switch game compatibility list distinguishes titles listed as unusable from games with compatibility issues and games with controller caveats.
Nintendo has not supplied an overall percentage or total count of original Switch games that work on Switch 2. The reliable answer is therefore title by title, not a blanket promise that every game runs.
What kinds of compatibility exceptions should you expect?
Games that do not work
Nintendo lists Nintendo Labo Toy-Con 04: VR Kit as unusable because Switch 2 cannot fit into its Toy-Con VR Goggles. Its dated list also identifies the Niconico, ABEMA, Hulu, Crunchyroll, and InkyPen apps as unusable on Switch 2. Check Nintendo’s current title status before drawing conclusions from that June 5, 2025 list. Nintendo compatibility list

Games that need original Joy-Con for some features
Joy-Con 2 lacks some features of the original Joy-Con and does not fit certain original accessories. For the games Nintendo identifies, original Joy-Con can connect wirelessly to Switch 2; this is a workaround for specific controller-related limitations, not a fix for every compatibility problem. Nintendo’s compatibility support page
- Ring Fit Adventure: Joy-Con 2 cannot attach to the Ring-Con or fit the leg strap. Use original Joy-Con wirelessly.
- 1-2-Switch: Features that use the original right Joy-Con’s IR Motion Camera require that controller.
- Game Builder Garage: The IR Motion Camera Nodon and IR-Light Nodon in Free Programming require an original right Joy-Con.
- Nintendo Switch Sports: Joy-Con 2 does not fit the leg strap, and Soccer Shoot-Out requires original Joy-Con.
- WarioWare: Move It!: Microgames that use the IR Motion Camera require an original right Joy-Con.
Nintendo also warns that fit and attachment constraints can affect other Labo Toy-Con kits. Check the relevant game and accessory details if play depends on a physical attachment.

How to play games you already own
Physical game cards
Insert a compatible original Switch game card into Switch 2. The card must still be compatible with the new console; owning a physical copy does not override a title-level limitation. Nintendo’s instructions cover inserting and removing game cards, including Switch 2 Edition cards. How to insert or remove game cards on Switch 2
Digital purchases and virtual game cards
Link the Nintendo Account used to buy a digital game to Switch 2 to access eligible purchases. Nintendo’s virtual game card system represents digital games and DLC: once loaded onto a console, the card can be played offline there, and other users on that console may play it. An account can have virtual game cards loaded on up to two Switch 2 or Switch consoles in any combination; compatible cards can also be lent within a Nintendo Account family group. These rules concern access and sharing, not whether a game itself is compatible. Nintendo’s game-transfer support page · Nintendo’s virtual game card guide

System Transfer is separate from game compatibility
Nintendo’s System Transfer can move digital games, certain save data, and settings. Digital games are redownloaded after the transfer; that does not mean every save file or every title-specific save-transfer method behaves identically. If a particular save matters, check the game’s transfer requirements rather than assuming that downloading the game also moves its save. Nintendo’s Switch 2 transfer guide

Some original Switch games receive free updates, which may improve performance or add support for features such as GameShare. Select games also have paid Switch 2 Edition upgrade packs. What an upgrade adds varies by game and may include visual improvements, features, or modes; an upgrade is optional and is not required simply to play a compatible original game.

A quick checklist before you switch consoles
- Look up the exact game on Nintendo’s current product page or eShop; do not rely only on the dated compatibility list.
- Check whether the game is fully usable, has a known issue or workaround, or is listed as unsupported.
- If motion-camera features or a physical accessory are involved, confirm whether original Joy-Con are required and whether your accessory fits.
- For physical ownership, use the game card; for digital ownership, link the purchasing Nintendo Account and load the virtual game card as needed.
- If you need saves or settings, review System Transfer and any game-specific save-transfer process separately.
- Compare any free update or paid Switch 2 Edition upgrade with what you need; neither should be assumed to come with basic backward compatibility.
