For HBO Max subscribers, DC Studios’ changes mainly mean a coordinated slate of DC films and series is being developed for film, television and animation, with some projects announced for HBO Max. The announcements do not establish a related change to subscribers’ billing, account terms or device compatibility. What you can watch—and the plans available—depends on your country and the local catalog.
What changed at DC Studios?
In January 2023, Warner Bros. Discovery (WBD) named James Gunn and Peter Safran co-chairmen and CEOs of DC Studios and described a long-term, interconnected story across film, television and animation. Its initial Chapter 1 announcement included five films and five television series in development. Those figures describe the announced slate at that time; they are not a count of projects still active or a guarantee that each will arrive on its original schedule. WBD’s 2023 slate announcement
That creative strategy is separate from the HBO Max brand change. In May 2025, WBD announced that Max would return to the HBO Max name. The brand announcement does not mean every DC title is available in every country or included with every subscription tier. WBD’s brand announcement
What DC Studios programming has HBO Max announced?
Superman
WBD announced that Superman would make its global streaming debut exclusively on HBO Max on September 19, 2025. The same announcement gave September 20 as the film’s HBO linear debut in the United States. Those are separate dates for streaming and linear television. WBD’s Superman announcement

Lanterns
In a May 2026 programming announcement, WBD listed the DC Studios series Lanterns for an August 16, 2026 debut on HBO Max, with eight episodes released weekly. This is the announced schedule for that series, not a stated release rule for future DC projects. WBD’s 2026 programming announcement
Does this change your HBO Max subscription?
The cited DC slate, platform-branding and programming announcements do not announce a universal change to HBO Max account terms, billing, subscription prices or supported devices because of DC Studios’ creative strategy. They concern studio plans, platform branding and programming—not a new subscriber requirement.

Availability and plan offers are market-specific. WBD announced an HBO Max launch in the UK and Ireland for March 26, 2026, describing a service combining content from HBO, Warner Bros., DC Studios and Max Originals. Any plan details or prices in that launch announcement apply to that market and launch context; they should not be treated as U.S. prices or universal terms. WBD’s UK and Ireland launch announcement
What to check before subscribing for DC content
- Find the specific title. An announced DC slate does not establish that the full DC library is included. Check whether the film or series you want is in your country’s current catalog.
- Check the local plan and price. Compare the offers shown for your market, including whether a plan has advertising, rather than relying on another country’s announcement.
- Check the release window. A studio slate, streaming debut and linear-TV date are different kinds of announcements. Confirm the date and service for the title you want.
Is the corporate restructuring part of the subscriber change?
In June 2025, WBD announced a planned separation into two publicly traded companies and described Streaming & Studios as including DC Studios, HBO and HBO Max. That announcement described a corporate plan, not a consumer-facing change to HBO Max subscriptions. WBD’s separation announcement
