Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →For Nintendo Switch 2, buy a microSD Express card—not a standard microSD, microSDHC, or microSDXC card. Nintendo supports microSD Express cards up to 2 TB. After buying one, power off the console, open the adjustable stand, and insert the card label facing away from the console until it clicks.
What kind of microSD card works with Nintendo Switch 2?
Switch 2 supports microSD Express cards only for expandable storage. Nintendo says the standard is required for faster access speeds and smooth game operation; an ordinary microSD card that worked in the original Switch is not a substitute for Switch 2 game storage. See Nintendo’s compatibility guidance and its microSD Express FAQ.
Use this purchase checklist
- Check the standard: The packaging or product listing must explicitly say microSD Express. A conventional microSDXC label alone does not establish compatibility.
- Check capacity: Nintendo’s stated supported maximum is 2 TB. Any microSD Express card up to that capacity meets its published guidance.
- Compare the rest on your own needs: Choose capacity based on your downloadable-game library and budget. Nintendo’s support information does not rank brands, identify a best-value size, or provide model-by-model performance comparisons.
- Plan for setup: Nintendo says an internet system update is required the first time a microSD Express card is used.
Cards are sold separately. Nintendo’s older guidance for ordinary microSD cards on the original Switch does not make those cards suitable for Switch 2 game storage.
How to install or remove a microSD Express card
Nintendo’s installation procedure does not call for a separate tool or a separate formatting step. Follow these steps:

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Power off the console. Hold the POWER button for at least three seconds, select Power Options, then Power Off.
- Gently open the adjustable stand to reveal the microSD Express card slot.
- Hold the card with its label facing away from the console, then insert it straight into the slot.
- Push gently until the card clicks into place. The first time you use it, connect to the internet for the required system update.
To remove the card, power off the console first, press the card inward until it clicks, then slide it out. See Nintendo’s insert-and-remove instructions.
What the card stores—and what it does not
A microSD Express card can hold downloadable software, downloadable content, software update data, screenshots, and captured gameplay video. Game save data stays in system memory; Nintendo says it cannot be copied or saved to the card. The card becoming the default location for downloadable software does not mean it stores game saves. Nintendo states this in its microSD Express FAQ.

Move software between system memory and the card
To move eligible software data, open System Settings > Data Management > Move System / microSD Express Card Data, then select the software data to move. Save data and some update data cannot be migrated. The tool does not set a permanent destination for future installs, and later updates may be saved somewhere other than the location you chose. See Nintendo’s data-move instructions.
Can you reuse an old Nintendo Switch microSD card?
An ordinary microSD card from the original Switch cannot serve as Switch 2 game storage, and it does not let you load or save game data on Switch 2. There is a limited exception: you can import screenshots and video from an old card. That is a way to bring over media, not a way to use the old card for games. Nintendo explains card compatibility in its compatibility guidance and describes Switch-to-Switch 2 transfer in its system-transfer information.

Should you use one card or several?
Nintendo recommends using one microSD Express card with the console. If it fills, Nintendo says you can copy all data to a larger card. Software stored across multiple cards cannot later be combined onto one card, so a single-card setup avoids that consolidation problem. Choose a capacity with room for the library you expect, without treating any size as a universal recommendation.
