Sometimes—but there is no universal break-even point. A subscription can cost less if you play several games included in your plan during the months you pay for it. Buying games individually can be cheaper if you want only a few titles, expect to keep playing them over a long period, or want a physical copy. The right comparison is your subscription cost against the current price of the specific games you actually plan to play, over the same period.
How to compare the cost fairly
- Choose a time period. Compare the cost of a subscription for the months you expect to use it with the prices of games you would buy during that same period.
- List the games you genuinely want to play. Count a title only if it is available in your region, on your platform, and in the plan tier you would choose.
- Check current purchase prices. Compare the same editions and platforms, and consider sale, used, and physical-copy options where relevant.
- Add only benefits you would otherwise pay for. If online multiplayer or another included feature replaces a cost you would genuinely incur, show that value separately. Do not treat every advertised perk as savings.
- Account for access after the period ends. A purchase generally remains playable, while subscription access depends on an active membership and a title remaining in the catalog.
If the subscription costs less than the total price of the games you would actually buy in that period—and its access conditions suit you—it may be the cheaper choice. A large catalog count alone does not establish value: games you would not choose do not reduce your personal cost.
What current U.S. plans illustrate
The following official U.S. prices and plan descriptions were checked October 4, 2026. They are examples, not a universal comparison: subscription prices and catalogs vary by country and can change.
| Service or plan | U.S. price and term | What the plan includes that matters to this comparison |
|---|---|---|
| PlayStation Plus Essential | $79.99 for 12 months | Monthly games, online multiplayer, and other core benefits. PlayStation says PS4 games will be added only intermittently from January 2026. PlayStation |
| PlayStation Plus Extra | $134.99 for 12 months | Essential benefits plus a Game Catalog PlayStation describes as hundreds of games, with titles added regularly; games may have end dates. PlayStation |
| PlayStation Plus Premium | $159.99 for 12 months | Lower-tier benefits plus a Classics Catalog, game trials, and streaming features. PlayStation |
| Nintendo Switch Online individual | $19.99 per year | Online play and a curated NES, Super NES, and Game Boy library. Nintendo |
| Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack individual | $49.99 per year | Base benefits plus selected GameCube, Nintendo 64, Game Boy Advance, and SEGA Genesis classics, as well as selected upgrade packs or DLC. Some selected DLC requires the full game. Nintendo |
| Nintendo Switch Online family | $34.99 per year | Up to eight accounts; the per-person cost depends on how many accounts share the plan. Nintendo |
| Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack family | $79.99 per year | Up to eight accounts; sharing can substantially change per-person cost. Nintendo |
| Xbox Game Pass plans | Price not stated on the captured official page; check your local live price | Xbox advertised 500+ games for Ultimate, 200+ for Premium, 50+ for Essential, and 300+ for PC Game Pass when checked. These counts do not guarantee a particular game is available to you. Xbox |
These services are not identical products. Nintendo Switch Online is described primarily through online play, classic-game libraries, compatible cloud saves, and other benefits; Expansion Pack adds more classics and selected DLC. It should not automatically be treated as an all-new-release catalog. PlayStation tiers also differ in catalog access and added features. Compare the tier you would actually subscribe to, not the service name alone.

When a subscription is more likely to cost less
- You plan to play several included games within a short, defined period.
- The games you want are in your exact plan, region, and platform now—not merely somewhere in the service’s catalog.
- You are comfortable finishing or replaying them while your membership is active.
- You would otherwise pay for included benefits, such as online multiplayer, and count only the amount you truly would have spent.
- You can share an eligible family plan among people who will use it. Nintendo’s U.S. family memberships cover up to eight accounts, so actual use affects the per-person calculation. Nintendo
When buying games individually may be better value
- You want only one or two specific titles and their current purchase prices are below the subscription cost for the period you would need.
- You expect to take a long time to finish a game, revisit it after months, or keep playing after canceling.
- You want a physical copy, or can find an individual purchase through a sale or used market that suits you.
- The desired title is absent from the relevant tier, unavailable in your region or platform, or likely to leave before you finish it.
- You do not use the plan’s other benefits enough to assign them a real value.
Catalog access is not the same as ownership
Xbox says Game Pass access lasts until the membership is canceled or expires, or until a game leaves the catalog. It also says titles, quantity, features, and availability vary over time, region, plan, and platform; recurring billing is on by default. Check the terms and renewal settings for your account before subscribing. Xbox
PlayStation says catalog games may have end dates. Add-ons purchased for a catalog game become inaccessible if the membership ends or the game leaves the service; they can be used again if you resubscribe or buy the game. PlayStation

A purchase is therefore easier to value over a long horizon: you are paying for continued access to that game rather than access conditional on a membership and catalog availability. The exact value of that difference depends on how long you play and whether continued access matters to you.

Catalog size is a vendor-reported snapshot, not a measure of how many games you will play or a promise that a particular title will remain available. For example, Xbox announced on April 21, 2026 that future Call of Duty titles would not join Ultimate or PC Game Pass at launch and would be added during the following holiday season, about a year later. Existing Call of Duty titles already included would remain subject to normal catalog terms. Xbox Wire
