Choose Baldur’s Gate 3 for the hardware you already own: PC suits players who want graphics configuration or supported mods, PS5 and Xbox suit console-first play, and Steam Deck is for players who prioritize handheld gaming and can do without split-screen. Cross-play now lets PC, Mac, Xbox, and PS5 players join one another, so matching friends’ platforms is less decisive than it once was.
Which platform is the best fit?

Prices, discounts, stock, and edition details change by region and storefront, so check the live listing for the platform you choose. The evidence here does not support declaring one platform a universal performance winner.
What to weigh before buying
- Hardware and total cost: Start with a device you already own. If you need new hardware just for BG3, account for its full cost rather than comparing game prices alone.
- Where you want to play: PC, PS5, and Xbox are conventional fixed-screen options; the Steam Deck is the handheld choice.
- How you play with others: Solo and online multiplayer work across the supported platforms, but split-screen is not available on Steam Deck. Consider whether you plan to play locally on one screen or online with friends.
- Friends’ platforms: Cross-play covers PC, Mac, Xbox, and PS5. Connect platform accounts to Larian accounts and enable “Allow Cross-Play” to use it.
- Mods: PC is the option for supported PC mods. Players joining a cross-play lobby with mods need compatible versions; third-party mods cannot be used on consoles.
- PC capability and storage: Compare your Windows PC with Larian’s published minimum and recommended specifications below, including its SSD requirement.
Cross-play and cross-platform progression
Larian’s Patch 8 announcement says PC, Mac, Xbox, and PlayStation 5 support cross-play and cross-platform progression through the Larian Network. The platform list does not include Steam Deck as a separate platform; a Deck runs the PC version, but the announcement does not describe it separately.
- Connect your platform account to a Larian account.
- Turn on “Allow Cross-Play” in the game’s settings. Saves intended for cross-play may also require cross-play to be enabled.
- For a modded lobby, make sure everyone joining has the same mod versions. Third-party mods are not available on consoles.
Cross-save limits and keeping saves safe
Larian’s support FAQ says, “With Cross-Save enabled, your Larian Account will also sync a copy of your last 10 saves.” Those server copies are retained for up to six months; the limit applies to copies stored on Larian’s servers, not saves stored locally on a PC or console. Keep important saves on your device or in another backup location rather than relying on Larian’s copies as a permanent archive. Larian’s FAQ says inactive cross-saves older than six months that are displayed on Larian Accounts expire on September 29, 2026.

Larian’s published specifications are requirements, not a promise of a particular frame rate in every area or at every setting.
