Critic and player scores can diverge because they come from different groups, use different rating systems, and reflect different experiences of a game. A gap is a reason to look at how each score was made and what reviewers actually say—not proof that critics or players are right.
Critic and player scores measure different groups
On Metacritic, the Metascore is a weighted average of selected professional critics’ reviews. Its community can submit separate user ratings and reviews. Those numbers do not summarize one shared panel: critic coverage is selected and weighted, while the user score comes from people who choose to rate or review there. Neither should automatically be treated as a representative poll of all critics, owners, or players. Metacritic explains its scoring system, and its help page on weighted averages says that some critics and publications count more than others based on quality and stature.
Players and critics may value different parts of a game
A critic may assess a game in relation to its genre, design, technical performance, story, or place in the medium. A player may be more affected by the parts they personally enjoy, how much time they spend with it, or the circumstances in which they play. These are possible differences in emphasis, not a rule that every critic or player thinks alike.
A 2014 ACM CHI PLAY study surveyed 573 participants about their experience with a current favorite game. It found overlap between measured player-experience factors and Metacritic scores, but also differences in how professional and user scores appeared to be allocated. The authors concluded that “Metacritic scores do not reflect the full complexity of player experience and may be misleading in some cases.” The study concerns its particular survey and measures; it does not establish a universal formula for how critics or players judge games. Aggregation rules can widen or narrow a gap
A score is not just a collection of opinions; it is also the result of a calculation. Metacritic says its critic aggregate weights some publications more heavily than others, but the help material cited here does not disclose a complete numerical formula. Its color bands also reflect the site’s own conventions: Metacritic says scores below 50 generally indicate a negative review, while scores in the upper 70s or higher usually indicate an unequivocally good game. Those are Metacritic’s interpretations, not universal definitions of a good or bad game. Metacritic’s explanation of weighting and its explanation of score colors describe those policies.
Metacritic also says it accepts only the first review and score a publication releases for a game. The site says it adopted this policy in 2003 after concerns about pressure to change scores or remove reviews. That is the aggregator’s stated rationale, not evidence that every review is subject to such pressure. Metacritic’s help page on changed scores explains the policy.

Player ratings are calculated differently from one service to another, too. A simple average, a recommendation ratio, or a blend of ratings from multiple stores can produce different results from a critic aggregate—even when the underlying opinions overlap.
Timing, versions, and participation affect what a score captures
Critic reviews and user ratings may describe different versions or moments in a game’s life. Early reactions can precede substantial time with the game or later patches; a score for one platform may not reflect another platform’s performance. Participation matters as well: a user score represents people who chose to submit a rating, not everyone who played or bought the game.

For a useful comparison, check whether both scores refer to the same release and platform, when the ratings were posted, how many people contributed, and how each figure is calculated. Then compare the reasons people give. A complaint about a bug, a disputed design choice, and disappointment with a story are different kinds of evidence, even if all are expressed as low scores.
Polarized reactions can influence user ratings
Some rating episodes are shaped by organized or highly polarized responses to a game, rather than by a straightforward summary of play experience. A 2024 study of 65,466 public Metacritic reviews for The Last of Us Part II examines an especially visible case of ideological polarization. It is a case study, not evidence that every large critic-player gap—or every low user score—is coordinated or insincere. Read “Review bombing: ideology-driven polarisation in online ratings”.

A 2024 preprint by Javier Coronado-Blázquez reports 0.88 validation accuracy for a natural-language-processing model distinguishing review-bombing cases from ordinary negative ratings in its defined sample of English-language Metacritic PC-game data. That is the model’s result on its validation set, not an estimate of how often review bombing occurs across games, nor a dependable verdict on any one game without further validation. Read the preprint.
Low ratings by themselves do not prove a campaign. Look for evidence about timing, coordination, review content, and rating patterns before describing a response as review bombing.

How to read a critic-player score gap
- Identify the sources. Separate professional reviews from ratings submitted by platform or store users.
- Match the release. Check platform, edition, and—where possible—patch state so the scores refer to comparable versions.
- Check the timing and sample. Note when ratings appeared and how many contributed. A rating pool can change over time.
- Find the calculation. Determine whether you are looking at a weighted critic average, user average, recommendation ratio, or a combination of sources.
- Read the reasons. Compare the specific praise and complaints behind the numbers instead of treating a score as an explanation.
- Assess campaign claims cautiously. Investigate evidence of coordination; do not infer manipulation from a low score alone.
Comparison sites also make judgment calls. VideoGamesCritic, for example, says it compares recent releases above stated critic and player review thresholds, combines several player sources, and excludes some Metacritic pools it considers review-bombed when larger player pools contradict them. Its methodology page describes additional site-specific decisions, including a cap on press reviews. This is one approach, not a neutral or universal standard for measuring agreement.
