Metacritic’s Metascore is a weighted critic summary; OpenCritic presents several distinct measures, including its OpenCritic Rating, Top Critic Average and Critics Recommend percentage. To compare a game fairly, check which measure you are reading, how many reviews it includes, and whether the platform and edition match.
What each service’s score represents
Metacritic: a weighted Metascore
Metacritic describes its Metascore as a single score representing critical consensus. It says it selects reviews from highly respected critics, assigns scores to them and weights those scores into a number and color. Its About Metacritic page explains that process at a high level, but does not provide enough detail to reproduce a particular Metascore or identify each critic’s weight. The site’s About Us page describes the Metascore as a summary of critical consensus across entertainment categories.
OpenCritic: several measures on one game page
OpenCritic game pages display an OpenCritic Rating alongside a Top Critic Average, Critics Recommend percentage, critic-review count and percentile rank. These fields provide different views of the page’s critic coverage; they are not alternate names for one score. The OpenCritic game page presents these measures, but the material available there does not document enough of the calculation to derive a complete formula. In particular, do not assume the OpenCritic Rating is a simple arithmetic mean.
How to compare the numbers without confusing them
| What to check | Metacritic | OpenCritic | How to read it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Headline critic measure | Metascore: a weighted critic summary | OpenCritic Rating, with Top Critic Average also shown | Compare the services’ broad critic signals, but do not treat the labels as proof that they use identical inputs or formulas. |
| Additional context | Critic reviews and separate community ratings and reviews | Critics Recommend percentage, critic-review count and percentile rank, alongside review links | Name the specific field. A community rating is not part of Metacritic’s critic Metascore. |
| Platform or edition | Game listings can have platform-specific entries | The sampled presentation is a game-level critic page | Match platform and edition where possible; call out a mismatch rather than treating it as a like-for-like comparison. |
| Calculation detail | Weighting is described generally; exact outlet weights are not stated on the overview pages | The measures are displayed, but a full calculation method is not stated in the page material reviewed | Do not reverse-engineer undisclosed formulas from the displayed scores. |
Check review counts and coverage
A score supported by fewer critic reviews represents a narrower set of coverage than one based on more reviews. That does not, by itself, make either result wrong; it tells you how broad the visible sample is. When reporting or comparing scores, include the review count displayed on each service instead of implying that both aggregates draw on equally sized sets of reviews.

Match the game version before comparing scores
Metacritic lists games by platform, so a platform-specific entry may not be directly comparable to a game-level page elsewhere. Check the release edition and platform on both pages, especially when a game’s versions received reviews at different times or differ in content. If you cannot align them, say so; a score gap may reflect different review coverage as well as different aggregation.
Use the reviews to understand disagreement
Neither aggregate explains which strengths, weaknesses or review criteria led critics to their judgments. Follow the linked reviews and look for the reasoning behind the scores—such as performance, design, story or value—rather than treating a numerical difference as an explanation in itself. Metacritic describes the Metascore as a critical-consensus summary, while OpenCritic’s game pages link to the reviews represented there.

Neither service is inherently more accurate on the basis of its displayed fields alone. Use the aggregates as quick summaries, then check the review count, platform and edition, and the underlying reviews. Keep critic scores separate from audience sentiment, and be precise about whether you mean Metacritic’s Metascore or one of OpenCritic’s several measures.
