Riot Games describes those leagues as localized entry points for aspiring professionals—but participation is not a promise of promotion, a contract, or a lasting career. The competition system and its rules are documented more clearly than any shared academy training curriculum: teams’ day-to-day coaching and practice can differ, and should not be treated as one universal program.
What an “academy” team means in League of Legends
There is no single worldwide academy league or uniform roster model. Riot Games’ 2026 competitive overview lists several regional Tier 2 competitions, including North America’s NACL, Korea’s LCK Challengers League, EMEA’s Regional Leagues and EMEA Masters, and China’s LDL. The organizations, formats, and routes connecting these competitions to top-tier play are region-specific. See Riot’s League of Legends esports ecosystem overview.
Riot calls Tier 2 leagues “localized entry points for aspiring professionals, creating a sustainable pipeline of talent for the future.” That describes the ecosystem’s intended role, not an outcome guaranteed to an individual player. The official overview does not establish that every team has a directly affiliated academy roster or that every region uses the same pathway.
How the development pathway works
Players compete in a structured regional environment
Tier 2 puts players into organized competition within a regional system rather than promising a particular training method. The league provides the competitive context; the team provides its own approach to preparing players. The relevant league and season determine what competition a player actually enters.

Teams operate under season- and region-specific rules
Riot’s regulations library lists 2026 Global Policies covering team operations, roster construction, player eligibility, contract requirements, sponsorship guidelines, and disciplinary measures. It also lists regional materials, including 2026 NACL and ERL rulebooks. These policies establish constraints on how teams and rosters operate; they are not coaching curricula. Because details can change by league and season, consult the current rulebook for the region in question rather than assuming one region’s requirements apply elsewhere. See Riot’s regulations library.
Progression depends on individual opportunities
Competing in Tier 2 can give a player experience and visibility in a professional ecosystem. It does not by itself establish a route to a top-tier roster, a promotion, or a long-term contract. The official materials cited here do not specify a universal promotion mechanism across regions.

What academy players practice—and what is not established
The official Riot materials described above do not set out a common daily schedule, number of scrims, frequency of individual coaching, review process, mental-skills program, or academy curriculum. They also do not establish that every team teaches champion mastery, role fundamentals, communication, draft preparation, or review habits in the same way. Those practices may vary by organization, season, region, and player; claims about a particular program need attribution to that team, coach, or player.
That distinction matters: league rules explain the competitive and administrative structure, while an organization’s own materials or firsthand accounts are needed to explain its coaching and development practices. Without that team-level evidence, a detailed universal routine would be speculation.

Does joining an academy team lead to a professional career?
No progression rate can be responsibly given from the official sources cited here. They do not publish a directly relevant figure for the share of academy players who reach top-tier rosters, how long advancement takes, or how outcomes compare across regions. Tier 2 is a talent pathway by design, but that purpose should not be confused with a measured success rate or a guarantee for any player.
