Start by checking which version of The Witcher 3 you are running: the 2022 next-gen release is no longer the latest version. CD PROJEKT RED released The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt — Remastered on September 29, 2026, as a free upgrade for eligible owners, with visual and performance changes. Confirm your installed build and storefront before trying version-specific fixes. Then disable NVIDIA HairWorks, test resolution or scaling, and compare performance in the same scene after each change.
First, identify the build and the kind of performance problem
Because the game has moved on from its 2022 next-gen update, check the installed version or build in your launcher or game menu and consult the current CD PROJEKT RED support site for guidance that matches it. Graphics API options and older DirectX 11-versus-12 reports may not apply to the current build; use the options actually shown by your installation.
Separate persistently low average FPS from brief stutters or uneven frame pacing. Before changing settings, note your build, graphics options, resolution, settings, and where the issue occurs. Compare after each change in the same location or scene, since different gameplay situations can produce different results.
Disable NVIDIA HairWorks
CD PROJEKT RED’s current support notice says NVIDIA HairWorks may significantly affect performance and recommends disabling it until the issue is addressed in a future patch. Turn HairWorks off in the game’s graphics settings, then repeat the same scene or activity and check whether performance changes. The recommendation is specific to HairWorks; it does not establish that this setting is the cause of every stutter or low-FPS problem. Check the HairWorks support notice for its current status.

Test resolution and scaling before lowering several settings at once
Resolution directly affects how many pixels the system renders. CD PROJEKT RED’s example compares 5120 × 2880 (14,745,600 pixels) with 2560 × 1440 (3,686,400 pixels): the higher resolution has four times as many pixels to process. That workload difference does not mean frame rate will be exactly four times lower. Try a lower output resolution or an available resolution-scaling option, changing one setting at a time and comparing in the same scene. Scaling renders at a lower resolution and upscales the image to help balance performance and image quality; the publisher does not promise a fixed FPS increase. Check your PC against the current requirements
Compare your hardware with CD PROJEKT RED’s current PC system requirements, rather than relying on recommendations written for the 2022 release. The publisher says its minimum configuration targets 60 FPS or higher at Minimum settings and lists a GTX 1660 as the minimum NVIDIA GPU. This is a publisher target, not a guarantee of 60 FPS in every scene: frame rates can vary with gameplay, hardware, settings, and output resolution. If your PC falls short of the configuration for your chosen settings, lowering resolution or graphics options is a reasonable test; a GPU upgrade is a separate hardware decision, not a guaranteed cure for stuttering.

Use rollback only if your storefront offers it
CD PROJEKT RED says only the latest game version is fully supported. Its Remastered FAQ points to version-specific rollback instructions: Steam and GOG players can select the Classic branch, while the Epic Games Store provides only the latest version. Rollback changes which game version you use and may affect compatibility with current updates or modifications, so check the applicable rollback instructions before switching. Do not expect a rollback option on a storefront that does not offer one.

- Confirm the installed build. Check the version and available graphics options for your storefront; use instructions that match that build.
- Turn off NVIDIA HairWorks. Retest the same scene and check whether the current support notice has changed.
- Test resolution or scaling. Change one option, compare like for like, and weigh any performance change against image quality.
- Compare your hardware and settings with current requirements. Treat the publisher’s FPS target as a reference, not a per-scene guarantee.
- Consider a supported rollback only when appropriate. Verify storefront availability and version-specific guidance first.
The 2022 Complete Edition announcement listed real-time ray tracing and DLSS on PC, but that announcement does not establish one graphics recipe or a guaranteed FPS gain. If your current build offers ray tracing or upscaling options, treat them as settings to evaluate on your own PC rather than assuming a universal best configuration. The Remastered release may differ, so check its current documentation and in-game options.
