What WSCI is
Riot Games describes the 2026 World Star Challengers Invitational as a global stage for Tier 2 League of Legends teams. Riot calls the event a pilot for international Tier 2 competition, with the stated goals of enabling cross-regional competition and supporting development in the Tier 2 pipeline. Those are the organizer’s aims, not measured outcomes. Riot’s announcement was published September 3, 2026.
How teams qualify and how the field is drawn
The field has 16 teams: China, Korea, APAC, the Americas, and EMEA each contribute three, and the Asia Masters champion takes the remaining place.
Riot’s announcement says each region’s teams are identified through a mix of qualification pathways, but does not specify the exact criteria or selection process for each region. There is therefore no single detailed qualification route in the announcement that can be applied to all five regions.

For the group draw, teams are divided among three seeding pools. Each group receives one team from Pool 1, one from Pool 2, and two from Pool 3. A group cannot have more than two teams from the same region, and a Pool 1 team and a Pool 2 team from the same region cannot be placed together.
How the tournament format works
Group stage: September 20–25, 2026
The 16 teams are split into four groups of four. Each group plays a double round-robin, so every pair of teams meets twice. All group-stage matches are best-of-one. Riot lists 48 group-stage matches across six match days, with eight matches each day.

The top two teams in each group advance, producing an eight-team playoff field.
Playoffs: September 27–October 2, 2026
The playoffs use a single-elimination bracket with quarterfinals, semifinals, and a final. Every series is best-of-five: lose a series and the team is eliminated. The bracket consists of seven series, and Riot scheduled the final for October 2, 2026.
