It can be, but not because it unlocks path tracing. The Ryzen 7 9800X3D is a premium gaming CPU best suited to a new AM5 build, high-refresh gaming, or games that put substantial pressure on the processor. Path tracing is primarily a GPU rendering workload, so for a 1440p or 4K path-traced build, prioritize a capable graphics card first. Buy the 9800X3D if its CPU-side strengths suit your games and budget—not on the promise of a universal path-tracing frame-rate boost.
What the Ryzen 7 9800X3D does—and does not do for path tracing
Path tracing is a graphics-rendering workload. NVIDIA describes its RTX 50-series path-tracing capabilities in terms of GPU architecture, including fourth-generation RT cores and fifth-generation Tensor cores. A CPU can still matter to overall frame delivery when a game’s simulation or rendering pipeline becomes CPU-bound, but it cannot replace a GPU capable of the chosen path-tracing settings.
That distinction matters most when comparing high-end parts: a fast CPU may improve performance in a CPU-limited game or at a CPU-limited resolution, while a demanding path-traced scene may be limited by the graphics card. NVIDIA’s performance examples may combine path tracing with DLSS upscaling and frame generation; generated frames are not the same as frames rendered by the GPU, so check the stated settings when comparing figures. Where the benchmark evidence points
The available results show why a single CPU ranking cannot settle a path-tracing purchase. They come from different games, graphics cards, resolutions, and settings; none establishes a general 9800X3D advantage across full path tracing.

The table’s first and second rows show two different reasons a CPU may matter: one game comparison finds little difference between adjacent X3D models in a particular ray-tracing configuration, while another game scales strongly with the CPU. Neither result predicts performance in every title. For a path-traced 4K build, the relevant question is whether your actual games and target frame rate are CPU-limited after you account for the GPU.
Specifications, platform, and cooling to budget for
AMD lists the Ryzen 7 9800X3D as an AM5 desktop processor with 8 cores, 16 threads, a 4.7 GHz base clock, boost up to 5.2 GHz, 96 MB of L3 cache, and a 120 W default TDP. Its listed supported chipsets are A620, B650/B650E, B840/B850, X670/X670E, and X870/X870E. Check the exact motherboard’s CPU support list and BIOS requirements before buying. The boxed processor does not include a thermal solution. AMD recommends liquid cooling for optimal performance, so include the cooler in your build budget rather than comparing CPU prices alone.
AMD introduced the processor on October 31, 2024, at a suggested launch price of $479. That is a historical launch figure, not a current street price or proof of today’s value. AMD’s launch comparisons were conducted in AMD Performance Labs in October 2024; treat them as vendor tests with their stated configurations, not independent path-tracing results. Decide whether the premium fits your build
Compare the 9800X3D with realistic alternatives at the prices you can actually buy today. The decision should include the whole platform: a CPU swap on an existing AM5 system is different from a new build that also needs a motherboard, DDR5 memory, and cooling.
- Choose it for a premium all-round gaming build if you play CPU-sensitive games, aim for high refresh rates, and its current price leaves enough budget for the GPU your path-tracing target needs.
- Consider a less expensive CPU if most of your play time is at visually demanding 1440p or 4K settings and your frame rate is primarily limited by GPU rendering. Spend the difference on a stronger GPU where that better serves the chosen workload.
- Check your actual games and settings rather than inferring from an unrelated benchmark. Look for results at your resolution, graphics settings, upscaling mode, and target frame rate; compare average FPS and 1% lows where available.
- Count platform and cooling costs if this is not an existing AM5 build. A CPU that looks affordable in isolation may not be the best-value route once the required parts are included.
Current retailer prices are not established here, and the cited tests do not isolate full path tracing across matched CPUs in enough games to support a universal 9800X3D uplift claim. Treat the purchase as a CPU-and-platform value decision—not as a path-tracing upgrade by itself.
