If your console reliably plays the games and uses the services you care about, you do not need to replace it just because it is old. Consider spending money when a persistent fault, lost access, or a specific unmet need makes repair or replacement worthwhile. Compare actual local costs and terms; there is no universal age or repair-cost threshold that decides the question.
Start with what you would gain—or fix
Write down the concrete problem before comparing consoles. It might be unreliable hardware, a game you want that your system cannot play, a missing online feature, inadequate storage, an accessibility need, or a display or peripheral requirement. If nothing important is wrong or missing, keeping the console avoids paying for a benefit you have not identified.
Separate a want from a requirement. A newer system may offer features you like, but that alone does not establish that replacing a working console is good value for you. The decision depends on whether those features matter enough to justify the full cost.
If something is wrong, compare service options first
Request a repair estimate
Check the warranty and ask the manufacturer or a reputable repair provider for an estimate tied to your exact model and fault. Nintendo UK says repair costs depend on examination, that some repairs may be covered by warranty, and that out-of-warranty or accidental-damage repairs can incur fees. It also says customers can reject an estimate. Nintendo UK’s repair FAQ and repair-arrangement guidance describe that regional process.

Factor in downtime and uncertainty as well as the quoted fee. A repair may take time, and a single repair may not resolve multiple faults. Ask what the estimate covers and whether any warranty applies to the repair itself.
Check for a refurbished exchange
Refurbished exchange can be another option, but it is not available everywhere. Sony describes a fee-based refurbished console exchange for Ireland; check the current terms and the exact model covered on Sony’s Ireland repair and replacement page. Do not assume the same route or fee applies in another country.

Compare the real alternatives
Put the repair estimate beside the price and service terms for a refurbished exchange, if offered in your region, and a replacement console. Compare what each option actually fixes, its warranty or service coverage, expected downtime, and the risk that the problem remains. A low quote is not automatically the best choice if it does not solve the underlying issue.
Calculate replacement cost using confirmed values
Start with the local purchase price for a console that meets your needs. Subtract only a confirmed trade-in offer or realistic resale proceeds; do not count on an assumed value. Microsoft documents a trade-in program for eligible consoles in the United States and Canada through Teladvance, and in France, Germany, Italy, Spain, and the United Kingdom through Recommerce. Its page says consoles must power on and be functional, among other condition requirements. Check Microsoft’s trade-in information for current market coverage, eligibility, and the offer for your model.

For a price anchor, Sony announced on March 27, 2026 that recommended retail prices for the standard PS5 would take effect on April 2, 2026: US$649.99 in the United States, £569.99 in the United Kingdom, €649.99 in Europe, and ¥97,980 in Japan. These are dated, regional recommended prices—not guaranteed current street prices—and Sony listed different prices for Digital Edition and PS5 Pro models. Check Sony’s announcement and local retailers for the price and model available to you.
Make an apples-to-apples comparison
Before deciding, compare the option that keeps your current console with the repair, exchange, or replacement that could address the problem. Include the items that can change the total cost or usefulness:

- Out-of-pocket cost: Use a confirmed trade-in or resale value, not a hoped-for one.
- Fit for the need: Identify whether the option resolves the actual fault or gives access to the game, service, storage, accessibility feature, display, or peripheral you need.
- Model and included features: Compare disc and digital editions, storage, and included features rather than treating models as interchangeable.
- Compatibility: Check whether your games, controllers, and accessories work with the replacement you are considering.
- Ongoing requirements: Account for subscriptions or other requirements for the games and services you plan to use.
- Service terms and downtime: Compare warranty coverage, exchange or repair terms, and how long you may be without a working system.
- Support: Verify the status of the exact model in your region and whether it still supports the games and services you care about.
Check support for your exact model and region
Do not infer that a particular PlayStation, Xbox, or Nintendo console has ended support from general statements about product lifecycles. Microsoft Learn explains Microsoft’s general lifecycle policy: “Once a product reaches the end of support, or a service retires, there will be no new security updates, non-security updates, or assisted support.” That statement is not a status notice for a specific console. Check the console maker’s current regional support information for the model and services you use. Microsoft Learn’s lifecycle overview explains the general policy, while Microsoft’s console trade-in page covers its program rather than establishing lifecycle status.
Use the result, not the console’s age, to decide
Keep the system if it reliably meets your needs and no meaningful benefit justifies the expense. If there is a fault, decide among repair, a regionally available refurbished exchange, and replacement using actual estimates, terms, and downtime. If you are replacing it for a capability or access reason, confirm that the new model solves that specific need and that the total cost fits your budget. The right answer varies with the console, fault, region, and local prices—not a fixed number of years or a universal repair-cost rule.
