PC Slower Than It Used to Be?

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteYes, sometimes—but a console being discontinued does not decide whether its games can still play online. The key questions are whether the console’s network service is still running, whether the game’s publisher still supports its servers, and whether the game needs an internet connection to work at all. A store can close while multiplayer continues; a game’s online service can also end while its offline modes remain playable.
What determines whether online play still works?
Check three separate things for the specific game and console:
- Platform network: Is the console maker’s online service still operating for that system?
- Game servers: Does the publisher still support the game’s multiplayer or other online features?
- Connection requirement: Does the game have offline modes, or must it connect to a server to run?
These are independent. A closed digital store does not automatically switch off multiplayer servers, and an active console network does not guarantee that every game’s servers remain available. A disc or downloaded copy cannot keep a publisher’s servers online.
What happens when a store closes?
A store closure usually concerns buying content, not necessarily playing games already owned. The rules for downloads and online features are separate, however, and platform holders’ promises are qualified. “For the foreseeable future” is not a guarantee of permanent access.

Xbox 360
Microsoft closed the Xbox 360 Store and Marketplace on July 29, 2024. The company said games and DLC already purchased would remain playable and redownloadable, and that physical-disc games would remain playable on Xbox 360. Multiplayer and connecting with friends could continue after the store closure only for games whose publishers still supported their online servers. Microsoft also described continued cloud saves and backward-compatible play for supported titles on Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S. Microsoft’s Xbox 360 Store closure announcement explains the conditions.
Nintendo 3DS and Wii U
The Nintendo eShop stopped accepting new purchases on Wii U and Nintendo 3DS on March 27, 2023. Nintendo said owners could still redownload purchased games and DLC and receive software updates “for the foreseeable future.” That did not mean online multiplayer would continue: online play and other features that use online communication ended at 5 p.m. PDT on April 8, 2024. Modes that do not require online communication remain usable. Nintendo’s U.S. notice listed Pokémon Bank and Poké Transporter as exceptions still usable when the notice was written, while warning that their service could end in the future. See Nintendo’s notice on online services for 3DS and Wii U and its eShop closure FAQ.

Wii Shop Channel
Nintendo stopped allowing new Wii Shop Channel purchases on January 30, 2019. Its cited support page said already-downloaded WiiWare and Virtual Console games could still be played, but described redownload and transfer services as ending at a future date without confirming their current status. Do not assume old Wii purchases can still be redownloaded based on that notice alone. Nintendo’s Wii Shop Channel FAQ gives the original details.
What happens when a game’s servers shut down?
The outcome depends on the game, not just the console. A shutdown may remove multiplayer or a particular online feature while leaving a campaign or other offline modes intact. Some games, however, require an active connection and may stop working altogether.

PlayStation examples
PlayStation’s server-decommissioning notices list changes game by game, rather than setting one universal end date for older-console online play. Its notice says PS3 user-generated-content features for inFAMOUS 2 and inFAMOUS Festival of Blood ended on August 31, 2026, while their offline campaigns remain playable. By contrast, GUNS UP! became unplayable when its online services ended because it required an online connection. Other listed games retain some offline modes even after online features end. Check the notice for the exact game and platform on PlayStation’s decommissioned servers page.
PlayStation says previously purchased content remains downloadable for the foreseeable future, while play remains subject to each game’s online features and service availability. That is a conditional statement, not a promise that every online feature or download will last indefinitely. Its general service notice describes those qualifications.

How to check a specific game before you rely on it
- Find the game-specific notice. Search the console maker’s current online-service or server-shutdown page for the exact title and platform.
- Check the publisher’s support information. This matters especially where the platform holder says the publisher controls continued server support, as Microsoft does for Xbox 360 multiplayer.
- Identify the mode you want. Online multiplayer, local multiplayer, and offline single-player can have different outcomes after a service change.
- Verify digital access separately. If you depend on a digital copy, check whether it can currently be downloaded or redownloaded. A stated continuation “for the foreseeable future” is not permanent assurance.
- For a disc, check compatibility and connection requirements. Confirm it works on your hardware or a supported newer system, and whether the game needs online access to launch or play.
Unofficial replacement network services are separate projects, not a continuation guaranteed by the console maker or publisher. Nintendo warns that services imitating Wii U network features are unsupported and may pose unexpected security risks. Nintendo’s online-service notice includes that warning.
