Before you meet the seller
Confirm the exact model and what is included
Ask whether the listing is for an original Nintendo Switch, Switch OLED, Switch Lite, PS5 Disc Edition, or PS5 Digital Edition. Confirm which items are part of the price: controllers, cables, dock or stand, charger, and any games. Bundles vary, so do not assume an accessory shown in a listing is included.
Ask for a recent video of the specific console powering on and connecting to the internet. PlayStation’s official buying guide says, “Ask for video proof,” and recommends showing the buttons, ports, disc drive where applicable, power, and connectivity. A video can screen out obvious problems, but it is not a substitute for checking the console yourself.
Ask about history and agree on a test
Ask why the console is being sold, how long it has been used, whether it has been repaired or had account or service issues, and whether a receipt or original box is available. Treat the answers as claims until you can check them. Agree that you can power on and test the console, and that the seller will remove their account and reset it before handover.

Look up the seller’s reviews if buying through a marketplace, and confirm the return window and warranty terms before arranging payment. Coverage varies by country, seller, and whether the console is privately sold, used, or retailer-refurbished.
Inspect the console and controller in person
Check the casing, screen, ports, and serial number
- Look over the casing, screen, vents, connectors, ports, screws, and any included dock or stand. Watch for cracks, impact or liquid damage, excessive dirt, missing parts, and signs that the unit has been opened.
- Check that the serial number is present and legible. A removed or altered serial number is a reason to walk away or investigate further. PlayStation recommends checking the serial number and warranty seals when inspecting a used console.
- If the seller has a receipt or box, compare the serial numbers where possible. Nintendo says a Switch serial number may be found on its box or receipt, but its lost-system guidance does not provide buyers with a public tool to clear a console’s stolen status.
Power it on and test controls, image, and sound
Start the console and look for display problems. Let it run for a while and listen for unusual noise or signs of overheating; these problems may not show up in a short seller video. Test every button and stick on the included controller, not just the main controls used to navigate menus.

For a standard Switch or Switch OLED, detach and reattach both Joy-Con and test them attached in handheld mode and wirelessly. For PS5, check the DualSense buttons and sticks, wireless connection, and charging. These are practical in-person checks; Sony specifically recommends testing controls, ports, and connectivity on used PlayStation products.
Test every relevant port and the disc drive
Check the ports you expect to use, including power and charging connections. If the model has a disc drive, insert a game or movie disc, confirm the console reads it, and check that it ejects normally. The PS5 Digital Edition and Switch Lite have no disc drive, so there is no drive test to perform on those models.

For a Switch, connect the console to its charger and see whether it charges and stays powered. Nintendo UK warns that the built-in battery may fail if the console has not been charged or used for a long time. A brief check cannot establish long-term battery life, but a console that will not stay on during inspection needs repair pricing before you consider buying it.
Check online access before paying
Connect the console to Wi-Fi and try to reach its platform services. On a PS5, test PlayStation Network access during the inspection. Sony warns that a PlayStation product reported lost or stolen may be permanently suspended from PlayStation services; a restriction is a serious reason to stop the purchase.

Try online access and eShop connectivity on a Switch as well. A successful connection is useful evidence that the console can reach services at that moment, but it does not guarantee that no hidden or future restriction will arise. Nintendo’s lost-system information explains how owners can handle a missing system, not how a buyer can run a public pre-purchase clearance check.

Do not treat the seller’s digital library as part of the deal. Ask the seller to remove their account and reset the console, then check that the first-run setup appears and their user details are gone.

Nintendo says initializing a Switch deletes system-memory software, saves, screenshots, and user information, and unlinks associated accounts. Initialization attempts to connect to the internet to unlink accounts; if done offline, the Switch may remain registered as the primary console. When possible, have the seller initialize it while online.
PlayStation recommends resetting a console before transfer or disposal. Ask the seller to remove personal data and reset it before handover; do not accept a console that still depends on their account or credentials for ordinary use.
Compare the real value and protections
Compare offers using the exact model and capabilities, included hardware, tested condition, controller condition, online-service access, proof of ownership, seller reputation, warranty, return window, and total cost after any missing parts or repairs. There is no universal bundle or price threshold established here, and the evidence does not support a model reliability ranking or a general claim about used-console savings.

When to walk away or renegotiate
- The seller refuses a reasonable power-on, control, or connectivity test.
- The console cannot reach the relevant service, a PS5 reports a service restriction, or the serial number is missing or altered.
- The seller cannot explain a material mismatch between the console and its receipt or box.
- A controller, disc drive, screen, battery, or port fails a test you need. Price the repair or replacement parts before making an offer.
- The seller pressures you to pay immediately or wants to leave their account credentials on the console.
- The price seems implausibly low. Nintendo flags unusually low pricing as a warning sign for counterfeit accessories; that is a reason to investigate the controller or accessory, not proof that the console or seller is fraudulent.
No failure-rate, console-ban, stick-drift, or used-console-savings statistic is used here: the cited official guidance does not establish a general figure for those questions.
