Which console fits where and how you play?
Choose Switch 2 for play that moves with you
Switch 2’s central advantage is that the same system can be used handheld, set up on a table, or connected to a TV through its dock. Nintendo’s April 2025 announcement specifies a 7.9-inch built-in LCD, 1080p handheld display, and detachable magnetic Joy-Con 2 controllers. If you want to play away from the main TV, or hand controllers around for casual shared play, those modes are a meaningful part of the purchase—not an optional feature.
Choose PS5 for a dedicated home setup
If your console will stay in one place and your priority is playing on the living-room TV, Switch 2’s portability may matter less. Decide by the particular games and play modes you want rather than assuming one system is universally better. The available information here does not establish a current, model-by-model PS5-versus-Switch 2 performance ranking.
Start with the games you actually want
Make a short list of must-play titles before comparing hardware. Check each game’s current platform availability, release status, edition, and whether the relevant multiplayer mode is supported. A console’s broad library reputation is less useful than confirming that the specific games you care about are available on that system.

If you already own Switch games, Nintendo says Switch 2 supports compatible physical and digital Switch titles, but some games may not work or may not be fully compatible. Use Nintendo’s title-level compatibility list to check your collection rather than assuming every game transfers unchanged. For a PS4 library, check Sony’s current compatibility guidance for the games you own; specific backward-compatibility details are not established here.
Account for storage and accessories
Switch 2 storage needs a specific card format
Switch 2 includes 256 GB of internal storage. For additional game storage, it requires a microSD Express card; an ordinary microSD card is not a substitute. Nintendo says conventional microSD cards can be used to view screenshots and videos captured on the original Switch, but not for Switch 2 game storage. Confirm card capacity and compatibility before buying.

Do not assume every original Switch accessory carries over
Nintendo lists limits on older accessories: the original Switch AC adapter cannot power Switch 2 in TV mode, and the old HDMI cable is listed as incompatible. If you are upgrading, check each accessory individually instead of treating the old setup as a complete carryover.
Consider how your household plays together
Switch 2’s GameChat supports voice chat with up to 12 people, and up to four people can share screens. Video chat requires a compatible USB camera sold separately. As of October 4, 2026, GameChat requires a Nintendo Switch Online membership; Nintendo’s free-access period ended March 31, 2026. Check the current service and game-specific multiplayer requirements for the system you are considering, especially if online play is central to your decision.

Nintendo also describes GameShare, which lets a Switch 2 owner temporarily share supported games with nearby Switch-family systems. Its virtual game cards can manage compatible digital games across two Switch 2 systems. These features have eligibility and game-compatibility limits, so confirm that the games and systems in your household qualify.
Compare the full cost, not an old launch price
For the United States, Nintendo announced a Switch 2 launch MSRP of $449.99 and a $499.99 launch MSRP for the Switch 2 + Mario Kart World bundle in April 2025. Those are historical launch figures, not a current price check or a guarantee of today’s bundle contents. Nintendo says retailer prices vary. No current regional PS5 or Switch 2 street prices or stock levels are established here, so check the exact local listings before deciding.

Compare the complete setup: console and bundle contents, the games you plan to buy, any required storage or camera accessory, and recurring online membership costs. Nintendo also says that beginning in May 2026, new Nintendo-published Switch 2-exclusive digital titles may have different MSRPs from their physical editions.
