The simplest distinction is what each label describes: creepypasta is internet horror associated with circulation and folklore, Reddit horror is horror shared within a platform or community, and analog horror is an audiovisual style that makes fictional recordings or broadcasts part of the storytelling. They overlap, but they are not three competing names for the same genre.
How the three terms differ
| Term | What it mainly describes | Typical form or mechanism | What to look for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Creepypasta | An online horror-story tradition shaped by circulation | Stories, images, or legends copied, reposted, adapted, or discussed online | A frightening narrative travels among online communities, sometimes with uncertain or obscured authorship |
| Reddit horror | A platform or community context | Posts, comments, serialized fiction, and subreddit-specific conventions | The subreddit and the way its readers are expected to engage with the post matter |
| Analog horror | An audiovisual mode and aesthetic | Videos that evoke television broadcasts, VHS recordings, CRT displays, public warnings, or archival footage | The fictional recording or broadcast helps deliver the story, rather than serving only as a retro filter |
These are useful comparison axes, not mutually exclusive categories. A creepypasta can be narrated in a video; an analog-horror series can draw on internet folklore; and a story first posted on Reddit can circulate elsewhere.
What makes something creepypasta?
The name comes from “copypasta,” a term for text copied and pasted across message boards. Creepypasta is horror associated with that kind of online spread: a story or legend may be reposted, altered, discussed, or passed on with its origins unclear. The Science Fiction Encyclopedia traces the term to message-board culture around 2007 and documents examples and later developments (The Encyclopedia of Science Fiction).
The label also covers original horror written for online communities, even when a particular story is not literally copied from one post to another. Scholarship on digital folklore and horror hoaxes examines how circulation, uncertain authorship, and claims that events are real can shape how these narratives are received (“In the Dark: The Afterlife of a Horror Hoax,” 2023). The key distinction is that creepypasta names a tradition of online horror storytelling and transmission—not every frightening thing found on the internet.

Creepypasta.com offers a straightforward description of internet horror stories passed among forums and websites, and says its own site launched in 2008. That is the site’s account of its history, not evidence that it invented the form (Creepypasta.com FAQ). Scholarship on “Candle Cove” also discusses how recognizable themes and aesthetics developed around creepypasta (Jessica Balanzategui, “Creepypasta, ‘Candle Cove’, and the digital gothic,” 2019).
What does “Reddit horror” mean?
Reddit horror is a broad label for horror published on Reddit. It does not imply one site-wide format or rule: conventions depend on the subreddit. Reddit can also be a place where people share and react to creepypasta, making it a venue for that folklore tradition rather than a separate, mutually exclusive genre (Vilnius University Press, “Social Sharing of Emotions in Social Media System on the Example of Creepypasta on Reddit,” 2022).

Why r/nosleep is a distinctive example
In r/nosleep, stories are presented and engaged with as though they are true within the community’s fictional frame. First-person narration and reader responses can reinforce the impression of interacting with a real narrator. This is a storytelling convention, not evidence that the events happened. Research on collaborative digital horror describes this “as if true” mode and the role reader interaction can play in it (“The Minotaur–Maze Problem in Collaborative Digital Horror Storytelling,” 2025). The Science Fiction Encyclopedia dates the creation of Reddit’s NoSleep board to 2010; that date refers to the board, not the beginning of horror on Reddit or online (The Encyclopedia of Science Fiction).
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What makes something analog horror?
Analog horror foregrounds audiovisual presentation, often by imitating or evoking media such as an old television broadcast, a VHS tape, an emergency warning, or archival footage. The aesthetic does more than make a video look dated: the fictional artifact is part of how the audience encounters the story. A VHS effect on its own is not enough to settle the label if that recording format has no meaningful role in the narrative.

Analog horror sits within the broader landscape of internet horror, but its defining emphasis is presentation rather than how a story spreads or which platform hosts it. A Georgia Tech repository thesis situates the form in internet-horror history and discusses The Mandela Catalogue; it does not establish a definitive first work (“Analog Horror and the Internet: The Mandela”). Claims about a single origin should therefore be treated cautiously.

How to classify a horror story that fits more than one label
- Ask what the label is describing. If the focus is a story’s copying, reposting, adaptation, or folklore-like circulation, “creepypasta” may fit.
- Identify the venue and its conventions. If the relevant detail is that a story appears on Reddit or follows a particular subreddit’s norms, “Reddit horror” describes its platform or community context.
- Look at how the story is presented. If a fictional recording, broadcast, or archival artifact is central to the audiovisual storytelling, “analog horror” may fit.
- Use more than one label when needed. A work can be Reddit horror by venue, creepypasta by its circulation or folklore connection, and analog horror by presentation.
