In a post on r/NoSleepOOC, the production team said the stories were adapted with their authors’ permission, and that the authors would receive screen credit and compensation. For readers looking for more than one online-origin horror story in a single place, this is a clear starting point. Check the anthology’s current release and viewing options in your country before planning a watch.
Living Dark: The Story of Ted the Caver draws on a web narrative
Living Dark: The Story of Ted the Caver is described as a loose adaptation of “Ted the Caver,” a story self-published on Angelfire in 2001. That makes it a useful example of a web narrative reaching film, while “loose adaptation” is more accurate than calling it a direct transfer of the story.

The historical claim that “Ted the Caver” was the first creepypasta is disputed, so it should not be treated as settled fact.
How to find and verify more titles
- Use a horror catalog to discover candidates. Netflix’s U.S. “Essential Horror Flicks” category is one possible browsing shelf. It includes horror titles broadly; appearing there does not establish that a film was adapted from an online story, and catalog contents can change. Browse Netflix’s U.S. horror category.
- Search by the exact film title. Once you have a candidate, look for a production or distributor description, or reliable reporting, that identifies its source. Keep the wording precise: “adapted from,” “loosely based on,” and “inspired by” do not mean the same thing.
- Check where it is available in your territory. Search a current title-specific availability guide and select your country. For example, the U.S. JustWatch listing for the film Creepypasta reports subscription, free-with-ads, rental, purchase, and DVD options. Those options apply to that title and that U.S. listing at the time accessed; they do not establish availability elsewhere or for other films. Check the U.S. JustWatch page for Creepypasta.
- Check release status as well as source material. An announced or developing project is not yet a released film you can watch. Recent reporting by The Atlantic in August 2026 described Seasons as an adaptation of an r/NoSleep story and The Mandela Catalogue as based on a YouTube horror series. What counts as an online-story adaptation?
“Online horror” covers different source formats and degrees of connection. A forum story, a standalone web narrative, and a creator-made video series are not interchangeable, and a film may adapt a source directly or draw on it more loosely.

- Direct adaptation: the production identifies a specific online story as its source, as the Tales from the Void team did for its NoSleep stories.
- Loose adaptation: a film uses a story as its basis but substantially reworks it, as with Living Dark and “Ted the Caver.”
- Broader inspiration: a project draws on an online work or format without necessarily adapting a single story directly. Check the creators’ or distributor’s exact description.
When comparing recommendations, it also helps to note whether each title is a feature or anthology, whether it is released, and what kind of source it draws on. These details make a list more useful than labeling every title simply “based on creepypasta.”

An Inter-Text article published in Spring 2025 reported that r/NoSleep had 18 million members as of January 2025, up from 15 million observed in 2023 by a study it cited. This is a dated community-size figure, not a current count and not a measure of how many people watch adaptations. It cannot establish the size of the online-horror film market or audience.
