A title match, similar plot, search result, or fan repost can point you in the right direction, but none by itself proves which version came first or who wrote it.
Start with what the adaptation says it is based on
Check the film or series’ official credits, distributor or production-company page, press notes, and statements from its writer, director, or producer. Search the exact adaptation title alongside terms such as “based on,” “adapted from,” “Reddit,” “NoSleep,” “creepypasta,” and any credited author name. Give more weight to a primary statement than to a fan wiki or an article that repeats an attribution without showing its source.
Record the exact wording and who used it. “Adapted from” makes a stronger claim about a specific source than “inspired by”; a shared premise or mood may indicate only a possible influence. In a 2017 Engadget interview, Channel Zero creator Nick Antosca discussed adapting online horror stories and identifying and crediting their authors, saying, “One of the most important things to me is to credit the original author.”
Find and verify the story-side record
Once you have a claimed story title or author, search for the title and distinctive wording with the platform or community name. For a Reddit candidate, open the post and use its Share control to get the direct link. Note the username, subreddit, title, and displayed date. Reddit’s copyright report instructions ask for the exact location of a relevant post or comment and allow a link to the original work as supporting information.

For an archive page, inspect the byline, publication or submission details, and links to the writer’s own site or profile. Creepypasta.com says its bylines can include links supplied by authors and describes how it accepts original work in its submission guidelines. A byline or archive page is useful evidence, but it is not automatically proof that the page preserves the first publication.
Compare candidates instead of trusting the first search result
Creepypasta stories often circulate through copying and reposting. Creepypasta.com describes the form as stories passed around forums and sites, and says its early “classic” entries came from ongoing forum threads in its FAQ. As a result, a repost can be easier to find than the earliest record.

When several versions appear, compare their source authority, directness, authorship, dates, version details, and independent corroboration:
- Source authority: Official adaptation credits or an author’s own page generally provide stronger attribution than a third-party archive, recap, or fan discussion.
- Directness: A live original post is different from an archive copy or repost. A copied text may preserve the story without establishing when or by whom it was first published.
- Attribution: Compare named authors and stable handles, while noting when a byline is anonymous or absent.
- Date and version: Look for a displayed post date, links to earlier versions, and distinctive wording that helps distinguish revisions or copies.
- Independent corroboration: A creator’s attribution and a matching author-side record support one another. Multiple pages repeating the same unsourced claim are not independent confirmation.
If you cannot establish the first publication, describe the record as the “earliest version located” rather than calling it the original. A matching title or plot is a lead, not proof of provenance.

What to do when the Reddit post is deleted
Keep the URL and look for corroboration elsewhere: official adaptation credits, the writer’s own website or account, a credited archive, or contemporaneous discussion that links to the post. If you find a preserved copy, label it as a copy and explain what evidence connects it to the attributed author or post; the copy alone may not settle either point.
Reddit says deleted content is no longer publicly displayed on its platform and that its licensees must stop using deleted posts and comments. It also notes that third parties may retain copies made without permission. See Reddit’s explanation of what happens when data is deleted.

Use wording that matches the strength of the evidence
Make the attribution’s status clear to readers. These descriptions communicate different levels of certainty:
- “Officially credited as based on” when the adaptation’s official materials name the story.
- “The creator identified” when a writer, director, or producer names it in a direct statement.
- “The archive credits” when an archive supplies the attribution but stronger source-side confirmation is unavailable.
- “Widely attributed to” when the attribution recurs but its underlying evidence is unclear.
- “A possible influence” when evidence supports a connection but not a direct adaptation.
If no official source names a story, several versions compete, or the author is unknown, state that plainly. Separate what the available record establishes—such as a creator’s stated influence or the earliest located copy—from what remains unresolved, such as first publication or authorship.

Finding a story is not the same as establishing adaptation rights
Provenance research can help identify a writer or source, but it does not determine who owns a work or whether a particular adaptation had permission. Creepypasta.com’s FAQ says permission to feature or adapt an individual story must be negotiated with its author; it also says anonymous or unidentified authorship does not make a story public domain.
Reddit’s copyright overview describes general copyright concepts, including the distinction between creative expression and ideas, facts, methods, or short phrases. A plot resemblance, title match, or Reddit post alone is not enough to reach a case-specific legal conclusion.
