To have a PS5 download updates in Rest Mode, enable Stay Connected to the Internet, then turn on the automatic update options for system software and for games and apps. These are separate settings, so configure the ones you need.
Enable internet access in Rest Mode
The console must remain connected to the internet while in Rest Mode for automatic downloads and updates. On your PS5, go to Settings > System > Power Saving > Features Available in Rest Mode, then turn on Stay Connected to the Internet. Sony lists this as the setting that allows downloads and updates in Rest Mode: PlayStation Support: PS5 Rest Mode.
Set up automatic system software updates
System software updates have their own controls. Open Settings > System > System Software > System Software Update and Settings, then enable both options:
- Download Update Files Automatically lets the console download system software update files.
- Install Update Files Automatically allows it to install those updates automatically.
With both enabled and internet connectivity available in Rest Mode, the PS5 can download and install system software updates automatically. Sony notes that some updates may still require approval: PlayStation Support: PS5 system software.

Set up automatic game and app updates
Game and app updates are controlled separately from system software. Go to Settings > Saved Data and Game/App Settings > Automatic Updates, then choose the behavior you want:

If an update does not download or install
- Check the Rest Mode connection setting. Confirm Stay Connected to the Internet is enabled in Settings > System > Power Saving > Features Available in Rest Mode.
- Check the correct automatic-update controls. System software and games or apps use different settings areas; enabling one does not enable the other.
- Check for a game or app update manually. Highlight its home-screen tile, press the Options button, and select Check for Update. Sony says a game or app updates to the newest version available when started: PlayStation Support: PS5 system software.
- Allow for occasional approval prompts. Automatic settings do not guarantee every update can complete without interaction; Sony says some updates may need approval.
Manual system software update as a fallback
If a system software update fails, Sony documents a manual update method using a USB drive formatted as FAT32 or exFAT. This is a troubleshooting option, not a requirement for normal Rest Mode downloads. Follow Sony’s current recovery instructions at PlayStation Support: PS5 system software update.

Rest Mode is the PS5’s power-saving mode, and Sony says it can handle automatic system software updates while the console is powered down. However, system software updates and game or app updates have distinct switches in different settings areas. For full automatic updating, enable the relevant options in both places.
