Can Steam Frame Controllers Play Portal 2 and Halo Infinite Without VR?

Steam Frame controllers support non-VR games through Steam Input. A reported Portal 2 standalone rating does not verify the claimed separate-controller benchmark, and no Halo Infinite test results are established.

Steam Frame is designed to let players use its controllers for non-VR games, but the available evidence does not verify a benchmark of separate Steam Frame controllers in either Portal 2 or Halo Infinite. Valve documents general non-VR controller support, and Portal 2 has been reported as Playable when run standalone on the headset. Neither fact establishes that the controllers were tested apart from the headset or that either game produced particular performance or input results.

What “without VR” means for Steam Frame

Valve describes Steam Frame as a standalone headset for VR and non-VR content. Its controller documentation says the controllers provide standard gamepad capabilities as well as touch states, grip buttons, capacitive finger tracking and six-degree-of-freedom spatial tracking. When playing non-VR titles locally or through streaming, they use Steam Input. Depending on the selected bindings, a game may receive input as a generic gamepad or as keyboard and mouse input.

Valve says the system “also allows users to play non-VR content on the headset without a separate device.” That supports playing a conventional 2D game on the headset, rather than requiring a VR game. It does not establish that the controllers work independently after being detached or used without the headset.

There are therefore two distinct interpretations of “without VR”: playing a flat-screen game while using the headset as the display, or using the controllers separately from the headset. Valve’s documentation supports the general 2D-game use case, but the available sources do not confirm the second setup or the specific Portal 2 and Halo Infinite tests implied by the benchmark claim. Valve Steam Frame Controllers documentation and the Steam Frame overview describe the broader system.

What the Portal 2 rating establishes

PCGamesN reported on June 30, 2026, that Portal 2 received a standalone Steam Frame rating of Playable. The report says the default controller configuration and button glyphs worked, and that graphics settings and interface text were acceptable; it also notes that the game did not support the headset’s native resolution. This is a report about the game running standalone on Steam Frame, not evidence of a comparative controller benchmark or play without wearing the headset. PCGamesN’s Portal 2 rating report describes the rating and its details.

Valve’s standalone compatibility review applies to games running locally on the headset and excludes games streamed from a PC. For 2D titles, the documented review floor is 30 frames per second at 1280 × 720 during normal play, and a game’s default controller configuration must permit access to all content. Those are criteria for compatibility review—not a measured result for the claimed Portal 2 benchmark. See Valve’s Steam Frame standalone compatibility process.

What is—and is not—verified for Halo Infinite

The available sources do not establish whether Halo Infinite was tested on Steam Frame, whether it ran locally or streamed from a PC, whether the headset was worn, or which Steam Input mapping was used. They provide no benchmark figures or observations for frame rate, frame-time consistency, input latency, ergonomics, compatibility, setup friction or anti-cheat behavior. The Steam listing confirms that Halo Infinite is available on Steam, but does not document Steam Frame testing: Halo Infinite on Steam.

The same distinction applies to Portal 2: its reported standalone Playable rating is compatibility context, not evidence that separate controllers were benchmarked. Its Steam store page likewise does not substantiate the claimed controller test: Portal 2 on Steam.

How to read the benchmark claim

General support for non-VR controls makes playing flat-screen games on Steam Frame plausible, and the reported Portal 2 rating is a useful sign of standalone compatibility. But the specific claim that separate controllers were benchmarked in both games remains unverified by the sources available here. Without the original test method and results, there is no basis to report a performance comparison or to conclude that the controllers were used independently of the headset.
