Compare the exact editions before buying: features, cross-play and subscription requirements can differ.
Start with the game, not the platform
Make a shortlist of the horror games you actually want to play, then check whether each one is available for PC, PlayStation or Xbox in your region. Availability may differ by edition, and store catalogs and prices change over time. Check the current regional store listing for the game’s price and any subscription terms rather than assuming the same deal applies across platforms.
If you already own a suitable PC or console, using it may avoid the cost of buying another platform. For PC, confirm that your hardware meets the requirements for that particular game; the presence of a PC edition alone does not guarantee it will run well on your computer.
What each platform is best suited to
PC: adjustable settings and input choices
PC is a strong fit if you want to adjust graphics and controls and have a computer that meets the game’s requirements. Those settings and the resulting performance depend on the title and your hardware, so do not assume a PC version will outperform a console version without a relevant comparison using matching hardware.

As one example, the PC announcement for Until Dawn describes customizable graphics and accessibility features, separate specification tiers, and Steam Input remapping. The published requirements are specific to that game, not a general guide to horror-game PCs: PlayStation.Blog’s Until Dawn PC features and specifications.
PlayStation: a natural fit if you own the console or want its edition
PlayStation makes sense if you already own the relevant console or the version you want is available there. Do not assume its options match the PC edition. Sony’s Until Dawn PS5 page, for example, describes accessibility features including customizable controls, audio-visual options, QTE settings and glint enhancement. That is a title-specific example, not a feature list for every PlayStation horror game.

Xbox: check modes and online-play terms
Xbox can be the straightforward choice if you already own an Xbox or the horror game you want is available for it. Read the store listing to distinguish single-player from online modes and to check whether console multiplayer requires a membership. For example, the Xbox listing for Halloween: The Game identifies both single-player and online play and says online multiplayer on console requires a qualifying Game Pass membership sold separately. Those terms are an example for that listing, not a rule for every Xbox game.
Compare the editions on the details that matter
- Accessibility: Look at the exact edition’s control, visual, audio and timing options. Feature descriptions can differ between console and PC versions, as Sony’s Until Dawn pages illustrate.
- Performance and requirements: For PC, use the game’s own published specifications and compare them with your hardware. Do not use one game’s requirements to judge another.
- Multiplayer and cross-play: If you plan to play with friends, confirm that the exact game supports online play and cross-play across the platforms you intend to use. Konami’s Silent Hill 2 FAQ says the game does not support cross-play between PS5, Xbox Series X|S and PC.
- Online membership: Check the console store page for any membership needed for online multiplayer, and include that cost in your decision when it applies. Do not assume a single-player mode has the same requirement.
- Controls: A controller is optional on PC. Sony lists DualSense among supported PC peripherals, while noting that features vary by game and haptics may require a USB connection: PlayStation’s PC support information for DualSense.
A quick decision process
- Choose the game and edition. Confirm that the exact version is available in your region.
- Start with hardware you own. Check the PC requirements or confirm which console generation the game supports before considering a platform purchase.
- Compare the version-specific features. Check accessibility, controls and graphics options in the official listing or publisher information for each edition.
- If playing with friends, verify the setup. Confirm online modes, cross-play support and any console membership requirement for that game.
- Check the current total. Compare the regional game price and, where relevant, the cost of hardware or online membership.
So, which should you choose?
Choose PC if your computer meets the game’s requirements and you value adjustable settings or input options. Choose PlayStation or Xbox if you already own the compatible console or prefer that game’s console edition. If playing with friends is important, let confirmed cross-play support and online requirements decide the platform—not assumptions about the console brand.
