The right fix depends on the game and launcher, so use the game’s official support instructions before trying game-specific launch options or reinstalling.
Start by identifying the failure
Restart the PC and the game launcher, then try once more. Note what happens and copy the full error message or code. A game that closes immediately, a black screen, and a missing-file warning can point to different causes; Steam notes that launch failures can involve many causes across different hardware and software configurations.
- Game crashes on launch: Does it close to the desktop, freeze, or show an error?
- Black screen when I launch a game: Is there sound, a cursor, or a response to keyboard input?
- Missing game files: Record the exact file or repair message, if shown.
Check the specific game’s minimum system requirements before changing hardware or settings. Epic recommends this for Fortnite when there is no error message, and Capcom warns that a system below a game’s minimum requirements may not run it. If your PC falls short, settings changes may not bridge the compatibility gap. Check the developer or publisher’s support page for the game and your platform.
Repair missing game files through the launcher
Use the launcher’s built-in verification or repair feature before deleting files or reinstalling. It checks the installation and can replace files the launcher identifies as damaged or missing.

Steam
- Open Library and right-click the game.
- Select Properties, then Installed Files.
- Select Verify integrity of game files and let the check finish before launching again.
Steam says verification can take several minutes. A file failing verification is not always a problem: local configuration files may be expected to differ and may not be replaced. Avoid running several verifications at once or combining them with other system-intensive work. Steam’s menu labels may change over time.
Epic Games Launcher
For Fortnite, Epic recommends verifying game files early in its troubleshooting sequence. Use the launcher’s current verification instructions for the installed game; do not assume that another launcher has the same menus or repair behavior.
For a game that crashes on launch or freezes
After checking requirements and verifying files, work through updates and reversible settings checks. Change one thing at a time and retry the game so you can tell whether the symptom changes.

Update Windows and graphics drivers
Install available operating-system updates and graphics drivers from official sources, such as Windows Update and the GPU manufacturer’s driver channel. Restart after installing a graphics driver. Capcom includes Windows and driver updates in its PC troubleshooting checklist.

Close overlays and background applications
Temporarily close nonessential recording, performance-monitoring, overlay, and background software, then test the game. This is a diagnostic check for software conflicts, not a reason to permanently remove tools you rely on.
Check which graphics processor the game uses
On a laptop or PC with both integrated and discrete graphics, confirm that the game is assigned to the intended GPU using the operating system or graphics vendor’s settings. A game running on the less capable adapter may behave differently, but the correct selection depends on your hardware and software.

Test sensible graphics settings
If the game opens far enough to reach its settings, lower graphics options and test stability. Epic recommends lowering settings when troubleshooting Fortnite. If the crash occurs before the menu appears, consult the game’s support page for its supported way to change settings rather than editing configuration files at random.
For a black screen when you launch a game
First check for a response: wait briefly, listen for game audio, and try a harmless keyboard input such as Alt+Tab. If the game is responsive but the display remains blank, display mode or graphics settings may be involved; if it is frozen, treat it as a crash. Update drivers, check the selected GPU on dual-GPU systems, and try lower settings if you can reach the game’s menu.
Consult the game’s own support instructions before changing launch arguments or switching graphics APIs. Epic documents a Fortnite-specific Performance Mode option that may help Fortnite crashes, freezes, or black screens associated with DirectX 12. It is not a general fix for other PC games.

Check for heat-related symptoms
If graphical problems begin after extended play, overheating may be a factor. Epic recommends keeping vents unblocked, clearing dust from fans and airflow areas, and using the PC in a ventilated space. These checks can improve airflow, but a recurring shutdown or unusually high temperature may need hardware diagnosis rather than more game-setting changes.

Reinstall only after restarting, checking requirements, verifying files, updating, and testing the relevant settings and software-conflict checks. Follow the game’s official uninstall and reinstall procedure; a reinstall takes time and may not resolve an underlying driver, compatibility, or hardware issue.
If file errors return after verification or a reinstall, or you also see storage errors, investigate the drive or contact support. Replacing a drive is not an automatic fix for a game that will not launch. Similarly, do not upgrade a component unless comparison with the game’s requirements or a supported hardware diagnosis shows a specific mismatch.

What to send game support if the problem persists
A precise report helps the developer distinguish a game issue from a system-specific problem. Include:
- The game’s name and version, launcher, and the exact error text or code.
- Your Windows version, PC or processor details, GPU model, and graphics driver version.
- What you did immediately before the failure and numbered steps that reproduce it.
- Whether the problem happens every time, and whether verification or other checks changed anything.
- Any crash report or log the game provides.
Capcom’s troubleshooting checklist asks players to provide system specifications and crash files, and describes generating a DxDiag report in Windows. Follow the developer’s directions for creating and submitting system reports. Steam notes that some individual configurations may require help from a local technician.
Use security-software exclusions cautiously
Security software can sometimes quarantine a game executable, but do not turn protection off indiscriminately or create a broad exclusion. Only consider an exclusion after confirming the game files are genuine, and follow the game’s or security vendor’s instructions.
