If it supports joystick input, configure DOSBox to present the controller as a joystick and calibrate it. If the game only accepts keyboard controls, map the gamepad’s buttons and directions to those keys instead.
First, check whether the game supports a joystick
Look in the game’s manual, control options, or setup program. A game with joystick settings can usually receive joystick input directly through DOSBox. If it offers only keyboard controls, leave those controls as they are and use a mapper to translate gamepad inputs into the corresponding keys.
These are different input paths: joystick emulation makes the game see a joystick, while keyboard mapping makes it see key presses. A gamepad connected to the computer does not by itself guarantee that a game will recognize it.
Configure DOSBox for a game with joystick support
DOSBox v0.74-3 documents the joysticktype setting in the [joystick] configuration section. Its options include none, auto, 2axis, 4axis, and modes for a second controller. In that manual, auto is the default and selects an emulated mode based on whether one or two controllers are detected. The mode determines how DOSBox presents input; it does not ensure that a particular game uses every axis or button. See the DOSBox v0.74-3 manual.

- Connect the controller, then check the game’s joystick options or setup program to see which joystick configuration it expects.
- In the DOSBox configuration file, locate the
[joystick]section and setjoysticktypeto an appropriate mode. If unsure, try the defaultautobefore changing modes. - Start the game and enable joystick controls in its own options or setup program, if required.
- Calibrate the controller in the operating system and then in the game or its setup program when those calibration options are available.
The DOSBox manual also suggests trying timed=false for some joystick problems. Treat it as a troubleshooting option, not a general requirement or guaranteed fix. The correct configuration depends on the game and the DOSBox version in use.
Map a controller to keyboard controls
For a keyboard-only game, keep the game’s existing keyboard bindings and assign the matching gamepad inputs to those keys. For example, if movement uses the arrow keys, map the controller directions to those same arrows; map action buttons to the game’s existing action keys.

DOSBox’s mapper provides virtual keyboard and joystick controls, allowing a joystick event to trigger a keyboard event. The DOSBox Wiki describes opening it with Ctrl+F1 or launching DOSBox with -startmapper. DOSBox Staging documents its mapper for assigning gamepad buttons to keyboard actions, opened with Ctrl+F1 on Windows or Linux and Cmd+F1 on macOS. Check the documentation for your specific DOSBox build, since shortcuts and interfaces can differ. See the DOSBox mapper documentation.
- Open the mapper using the shortcut or launch option documented for your DOSBox version.
- Select the keyboard key the game already uses, then choose the option to add a binding.
- Press the gamepad direction or button that should produce that key press.
- Repeat for the game’s other important controls, save the bindings if the mapper offers that option, and test them in the game.
GOG’s Mortal Kombat 2 support guide illustrates this approach in its packaged DOSBox setup: select an in-game keyboard control such as the up arrow, add a binding, and press the desired controller input. Its menu sequence is specific to that game and environment; the general principle is to bind the controller to the keys the game already recognizes.

Using Steam Input
If you launch the game through Steam, Steam Input may provide another way to configure controller controls. Valve cautions that a configuration can fail when it uses an input style the game does not support. On Windows, Steamworks documentation says the overlay hooks traditional gamepad APIs—including XInput, DirectInput, RawInput, and Windows.Gaming.Input—and injects an emulated Xbox controller device. Whether that helps depends on how the game and its DOSBox wrapper receive input. See Valve’s Steam Input support guidance and Steamworks documentation.
If Steam Input and DOSBox’s mapper are both active, check which layer is responsible for each binding. Start with one mapping approach where practical; overlapping mappings can make it harder to tell whether a button is being treated as a joystick input or a keyboard press.

Choosing a controller and fixing common problems
A wired USB gamepad is a sensible first device to try. DOSBox Staging 0.83 says it automatically detects modern USB controllers and maps them to the emulated analog joystick, but that does not guarantee that every classic game, DOSBox version, or launch wrapper will use the controller as intended. - The game ignores the controller: Check whether the game has joystick support. If it is keyboard-only, use keyboard mapping rather than changing joystick modes.
- The game supports a joystick but movement is wrong: Calibrate in the operating system and again in the game or setup program when possible. Confirm that the DOSBox joystick mode fits the game.
- A button or axis does not work: The game may not support that input. Try a simpler joystick mode or bind the needed action to a keyboard key.
- Steam controls do not take effect: The chosen Steam Input style may not match the game’s supported input. Try a different configuration or use the DOSBox mapper.
- The mapper shortcut does nothing: Confirm which DOSBox edition is running and use its documented shortcut or launch option; mapper controls vary by build and operating system.
