To check whether your PC can run an older sci-fi game, compare your computer with the requirements for the exact edition you plan to play, then assess Windows compatibility separately. Check the operating system and architecture, CPU, RAM, graphics card and its DirectX or shader support, and free storage. Meeting minimum requirements is a useful first screen—not a promise that the game will launch reliably or run smoothly.
How do I check if my PC can run a game?
- Identify the exact version. Note the game’s full title, edition, storefront, and whether it is an original release, remaster, or updated build. Requirements and compatibility notes may differ. Start with the current page for the version you intend to play; if its details are limited, check the publisher’s support page and the official manual.
- Write down your PC’s specifications. Record your Windows version and whether it is 32-bit or 64-bit, your processor model, installed RAM, graphics adapter model, and available disk space. Windows’ Settings and Task Manager provide built-in ways to find system and hardware information. If you use more than one graphics adapter, note which one the game will use.
- Compare each item with the game’s requirements. Use a table like this to keep the check concrete:

Compare like with like. If the game names a specific graphics card, a different model or a card from another manufacturer cannot be judged reliably from its name alone. Look for trustworthy model-to-model comparisons if the exact model is not listed; the available guidance does not establish a universal benchmark cutoff or dependable calculator that can decide every game and PC combination.
Is the graphics card compatible with the game?
Check more than the graphics card’s name. Some games depend on particular DirectX or pixel-shader capabilities, so compare the game’s stated requirements with what the graphics hardware supports. Steam Support explains the distinction in its DirectX and Pixel Shader Requirements for Games on Steam. Graphics functionality emulated in software can reduce 3D-game compatibility and performance.
A recent DirectX runtime on Windows does not, by itself, prove that the graphics hardware supports every feature an older game needs. Check the card’s feature support as well as the game’s stated requirement.

Will this old game run on Windows 10 or 11?
Treat Windows compatibility as a separate question from hardware fit. A PC may meet a game’s CPU, memory, and graphics requirements yet still encounter an installation or launch problem because of the operating system, architecture, or other changes in newer Windows versions. Check the game’s supported Windows versions, any 64-bit requirement, publisher compatibility notes, and storefront warnings. Steam Support specifically advises checking compatible operating systems as well as hardware requirements in Game is not available on your current platform.
Do not assume every game from the Windows XP or Windows 7 era works on Windows 10 or 11. The manual for Scourge of War: Waterloo, for example, lists Windows 7 or 8.1, with Windows 7 compatibility mode required for Windows 8.1. It also says Windows 10 had not been released when the game initially launched, so the manual made no official statement about Windows 10 compatibility. What do minimum requirements tell you about performance?
Minimum requirements are a screening threshold, not a stated promise of a particular frame rate, resolution, graphics quality, or trouble-free launch. Steam Support identifies available RAM and driver condition as factors that can affect game performance; its Troubleshooting Game Performance Issues – Software guidance also recommends checking the game’s requirements. Actual results depend on the particular game and setup. If your goal is a specific resolution or smooth frame rate, look for evidence about that game on hardware comparable to yours rather than inferring performance from one component name.
What should I try if the game will not install or launch?
- Check the publisher’s updates and compatibility guidance. Look for patches, support notes, and instructions for your Windows version before changing hardware or settings.
- Try Microsoft’s Program Compatibility Troubleshooter. Microsoft provides it as an option for older apps or programs that have problems on a newer Windows version.
- Update device drivers if the game opens but has glitches or other issues. Driver updates may help, but neither troubleshooting nor an update guarantees that every old game will work on every current PC.

How to compare two PCs or editions
Apply the same checks to each option rather than judging by age or a single headline specification. Compare supported Windows versions and architecture, CPU, RAM, graphics model and required DirectX or shader features, and free storage. Then consider what “run” means to you: launching the game, or playing at a particular resolution and frame rate. The latter requires game-specific performance evidence; minimum specifications alone do not settle it.
