If an older PC game won’t launch on Windows, first check the publisher or storefront for an update or instructions for that exact game. If none are available, try Windows’ Program Compatibility Troubleshooter. Then choose the next step based on the error: a missing DirectX DLL calls for Microsoft’s legacy DirectX guidance, a request for the original CD may point to disc-based copy protection, and inconsistent crashes may warrant a clean-boot test. These steps are diagnostic options, not guaranteed fixes for every title.
Before troubleshooting, identify the exact game and error
Record the game’s title and edition, where you installed it from, and the full error message or a screenshot. On Windows, run winver to note the version and build. Also note whether the game worked before a recent Windows or driver change. These details matter because different releases of the same game can have different installation or copy-protection requirements.
Check for a game update or title-specific support instructions
Look on the publisher’s official support page for the exact game and error. Microsoft recommends checking the publisher’s website for an updated version when a program did not come from Microsoft Store; for a Store game, check for updates in the Store. Follow title-specific instructions before trying community patches or unofficial installers. Microsoft’s older-app compatibility guidance covers these update checks and the Windows troubleshooter.
Run the Program Compatibility Troubleshooter
For Windows 10 and Windows 11, open Start > Settings > System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters > Program Compatibility Troubleshooter > Run, then follow the prompts and test the game again. Microsoft notes that changes to operating-system architecture, security features, or requirements can cause older software to stop working after an upgrade.

Compatibility mode is another setting worth testing for an older desktop game, but there is no single Windows-version setting that works for every title. Change one setting at a time and undo it if the game behaves worse. Microsoft’s game troubleshooting guidance includes a compatibility-mode example; treat it as an option to test, not a universal remedy.
If the error names DirectX or a missing DLL
Run dxdiag from Start to inspect the computer’s DirectX information. A newer DirectX version does not necessarily include every older component a game expects. Microsoft documents a legacy case involving a missing d3dx9_35.dll and points to the DirectX End-User Runtime for that scenario; Microsoft says installing it does not replace the newer DirectX version on the system. If the game asks for the original CD
Some older Microsoft games use disc-based copy protection and require the original game CD in the drive, even if the game files have been copied to a hard drive or other storage. Microsoft’s article applies to the titles it lists, not to every disc-based game, so check support instructions for your specific title: Microsoft’s original-CD support article.
If the game requires physical media and the computer has no working optical drive, a USB DVD drive may provide a way to insert the disc. Check that the drive supports the disc format and connection the computer needs. An external drive may not overcome every legacy copy-protection incompatibility.

If crashes vary, test for background software interference
A clean boot starts Windows with essential drivers and startup programs, which can help determine whether background software is interfering with the game. Follow Microsoft’s clean-boot instructions. If the game’s behavior changes, restore normal startup and investigate the service or program responsible. A clean boot is a diagnostic test, not a game fix; do not broadly disable security protections as a workaround.

Contact support if the game still will not start
Send the publisher or storefront the game title and edition, installation source, Windows version and build, exact error, and steps you have already tried. Generic Windows guidance cannot determine a title’s particular installation, disc-check, or compatibility requirements.
