If OBS Studio closes or freezes while you’re live, first confirm that the application—not just the stream—has failed. A stream disconnect or dropped frames usually points to a network-path problem; an OBS crash needs a different diagnosis. Save the crash report and log, then test one change at a time: start OBS without third-party extensions, simplify the workload, check the encoder and graphics driver, and, on Windows, try turning off Hardware-Accelerated GPU Scheduling (HAGS). There is no single setting that fixes every OBS crash.
First determine whether OBS actually crashed
“OBS crashing” can describe two different failures. If OBS closes unexpectedly, freezes, or stops responding, troubleshoot the application. If OBS remains open but the broadcast disconnects or shows dropped frames, the stream may have a network or ingest problem instead. OBS’s Stream Connection Troubleshooting guide, dated 2024-09-30, treats dropped frames and intermittent disconnections as network-path issues, typically outside OBS Studio’s control.
- Application failure: OBS disappears, freezes, or reports that it stopped responding. Preserve its crash report and log, then follow the isolation steps below.
- Connection failure: OBS remains open while the stream disconnects or drops frames. Use OBS’s Stream Connection Troubleshooting guide; it covers bitrate, server selection, VPN or security software, Wi-Fi, and network drivers.
Note what you were doing when the failure occurred: clicking Start Streaming, streaming for a while, switching scenes, or activating a particular source. Also record your OBS and operating-system versions, CPU and GPU, selected encoder, installed plugins, and recent software or driver changes. Those details help distinguish a repeatable trigger from a one-off failure.
Save diagnostic evidence before changing the setup
Do not reinstall OBS or remove components before preserving the available evidence. A crash report and an OBS log are separate diagnostic records; neither establishes a cause until it is examined. OBS’s welcome page, accessed 2026-10-03, says the crash handler on Windows and macOS offers optional crash-report uploading. Keep the report and relevant log available if you ask OBS support or another knowledgeable helper to interpret them.

For further help, use the support resources linked from the OBS welcome page. Include the failure trigger and the results of each controlled test, rather than only saying that OBS crashes.
Test OBS without third-party extensions and overlays
Start in Safe Mode
OBS’s documented --safe-mode launch parameter disables third-party plugins, scripts, and websockets for that launch. Close OBS, then start it again with --safe-mode appended to its launch command or shortcut, following the method appropriate to your operating system. OBS documents this parameter on its Launch Parameters page, dated 2021-05-30. If you are unsure how to pass a launch parameter on your system, consult that page or ask for help rather than guessing at a platform-specific command.
Reproduce the same activity that normally triggers the crash. If OBS stays stable in Safe Mode, re-enable or update third-party components one at a time, testing after each change. This controlled process can identify a plugin, script, or websocket that is involved. If Safe Mode makes no difference, that lowers the likelihood of one of those extensions being responsible; it does not rule out every external conflict.

Close overlays and other capture software
For a second test, close on-screen display tools, overlays, and other software that captures or records graphics. OBS’s Known Application Conflicts page, dated 2021-08-25, explains that some third-party apps hook graphics functions OBS also uses and may cause crashes or unusual behavior. Its named examples are troubleshooting leads, not proof that any particular program caused your crash. Retest with the same scene and stream conditions.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsPlugin availability can depend on the operating system, architecture, and OBS version. OBS’s Plugins Guide, dated 2022-09-01, makes those compatibility qualifications; avoid relying on an old plugin path or assuming a plugin built for another OBS version will work. Check the plugin’s current compatibility information before updating or reinstalling it.
Reduce load and simplify the test
A busy game or scene can leave too little GPU capacity for OBS to render and encode reliably. OBS’s Encoding Performance Troubleshooting guide, dated 2021-06-12, suggests reducing competing GPU work and simplifying the workload. These are diagnostic measures for load-related symptoms, not guaranteed fixes for every application crash.

- Close other GPU-intensive applications and retest.
- Limit the game’s frame rate or enable V-Sync; if needed, reduce its graphics settings.
- Test with a simpler OBS scene, temporarily removing demanding sources or effects one at a time.
- If GPU overload or rendering warnings persist, test a lower output resolution or frame rate.
- On Windows, OBS also lists running OBS as administrator as an initial GPU-overload troubleshooting step. Try it as a test, and compare the result with the same scene and stream conditions.
OBS’s System Requirements page, dated 2021-08-25, distinguishes basic system compatibility from the ability to stream or record a particular workload. Meeting a baseline requirement does not guarantee that a given machine can handle your chosen resolution, frame rate, encoder, and scene complexity.
Check the encoder and graphics driver
Write down the exact encoder selected in OBS before changing it. As a diagnostic comparison, try another encoder that your system supports and repeat the same test. Do not assume a particular encoder is best without knowing your GPU, operating system, and OBS version.
OBS’s Hardware Encoding guide, dated 2022-01-11, discusses NVIDIA NVENC, AMD AMF, Intel Quick Sync Video, and Apple VideoToolbox with hardware and platform qualifications. Hardware encoding can move encoding work from the CPU to a specialized GPU component, but compatibility and quality vary across hardware generations. The guide recommends current graphics drivers for supported hardware encoders. Confirm present-day support and driver guidance for your own hardware rather than treating examples in older documentation as a universal compatibility list.

On Windows, test HAGS
If you use Windows and the failure involves OBS or a hardware encoder, temporarily turn off Hardware-Accelerated GPU Scheduling and reboot. OBS’s HAGS troubleshooting guide, dated 2023-05-07, recommends this test because HAGS may be associated with performance issues or failures involving OBS and hardware encoders.
- Open Windows graphics settings and locate the Hardware-Accelerated GPU Scheduling option. Depending on your Windows version, it may appear under Settings > System > Display > Graphics, in the default graphics settings.
- Turn the option off, then restart Windows.
- Repeat the same OBS scene and stream test. Record whether the result changed; if it did not, that test has not identified HAGS as the cause.
This is Windows-specific troubleshooting. Do not apply it to macOS or Linux.
If the OBS problem is really a stream disconnect
When OBS remains open but the broadcast disconnects or drops frames, switching plugins, changing HAGS, or replacing computer hardware is not the first step. Follow OBS’s Stream Connection Troubleshooting guide, dated 2024-09-30, and investigate the network path and ingest settings it covers. OBS says, “It is extremely unlikely for OBS Studio to cause dropped frames.” That statement concerns dropped frames; it does not explain why OBS itself might crash.

When to ask for individualized help
If the crash persists after controlled tests, share the crash report and relevant log with OBS support. Include your OBS and operating-system versions, CPU and GPU, selected encoder, plugins, the exact trigger, and which tests changed—or did not change—the outcome. A repeatable crash tied to one encoder, scene, source, or recent change is more useful to diagnose than a list of unrelated settings you changed all at once.
The OBS documentation cited here does not establish a universal crash fix or justify a generic CPU or GPU upgrade. A machine-specific diagnosis is needed before attributing a failure to a driver, plugin, encoder, operating-system feature, or hardware fault.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your real goal is keeping uploaded videos looping as a 24/7 YouTube live stream, rather than broadcasting gameplay or a camera through OBS, StreamNeo is a different workflow: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It runs from the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home. It streams the video as uploaded, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot; it can automatically recover if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. The monthly option is $9.99 per month.
StreamNeo is for uploaded-video streams on YouTube, not live camera capture, and it does not fix an OBS installation that crashes when you use OBS. See StreamNeo, or start the free first day.
