If DOOM: The Dark Ages crashes or runs poorly on PC, start by checking Bethesda’s hardware requirements, then work through reversible fixes: restart the game and launcher, confirm the game is using your intended GPU, disable overlays for diagnosis, and repair the installation. The right next step depends on whether the game fails to launch, performs poorly after launching, or matches a known issue such as an OBS crash or an invisible window.
Check that your PC meets the requirements
Bethesda requires a ray-tracing-capable NVIDIA or AMD GPU even at the minimum specification. Its published tiers describe target settings, resolution, and frame rate; they are requirements, not a guarantee of performance on every system. Bethesda’s system requirements page does not show a publication date in the retrieved text.

All three tiers list Windows 10 64-bit or Windows 11 64-bit. If your system is below minimum—especially on ray-tracing capability, memory, or storage—software troubleshooting may not make the game playable. Bethesda says many performance problems are hardware-related in its PC performance guidance.
If DOOM: The Dark Ages will not launch or crashes immediately
Try these steps in order, stopping when the issue is resolved. Bethesda’s launch checklist is for PC and does not guarantee a fix for every crash.

- Restart the launcher and Windows. Fully exit Steam, the Xbox app for PC, or Battle.net, reopen it, and restart the PC.
- Confirm the game is assigned to the intended GPU. This matters especially on laptops with both integrated and discrete graphics. Check Windows graphics settings or your GPU control panel and select the high-performance GPU for the game.
- Check current GPU-driver guidance. Bethesda’s support pages list AMD 25.5.1 and NVIDIA 576.40 as driver baselines, but later official Steam announcement material gives different NVIDIA guidance, including NVIDIA 610.74 WHQL or later. These are source- and update-specific references, not a reliable statement of the latest driver for your system. Check the current official Steam announcements and your GPU maker’s release notes for your GPU and game version.
- Check the DirectX runtime components. Bethesda says reinstalling required DirectX runtime files may resolve some launch problems. Use Microsoft’s or your platform’s official installation guidance rather than downloading individual runtime files from an unfamiliar site.
- Verify or repair the game installation. Use the repair or file-verification option in the platform where you installed the game. If you added mods, remove them; Bethesda’s launch guidance recommends reinstalling and then repairing the game again when mods are involved.
- Review administrator and antivirus settings. Bethesda suggests checking administrator configuration and adding the game to antivirus exclusions. Follow your security vendor’s instructions and do not turn off protection broadly.
- Disable overlays as a test. Turn off Steam Overlay or Xbox Game Bar temporarily, then test the launch. Bethesda also mentions Windows Game Mode as an alternative to investigate for Steam-related overlay or performance problems.
If the game launches but runs poorly
- Compare your hardware and install drive with the requirements. Bethesda recommends an NVMe SSD and lists 100 GB of available NVMe storage. An NVMe drive is a requirement and troubleshooting recommendation, not a guaranteed frame-rate fix.
- Enable Hardware-accelerated GPU scheduling. Bethesda’s performance guidance recommends this Windows setting. If the option is unavailable on your system, proceed to the other checks rather than assuming it should be present on every configuration.
- Run a controlled overlay and background-app test. Disable Steam Overlay, Xbox Game Bar, and third-party overlays, and close unnecessary applications that use memory. Change one category at a time where practical so you can tell whether it affects the problem.
- Check GPU selection and power behavior. Make sure the game uses the primary or high-performance GPU and an appropriate power profile. On a laptop, connect the power adapter during testing if practical; power-saving behavior can switch the game to integrated graphics.
- Lower graphics quality or restore the detected settings. If the problem began after changing graphics options, return to the auto-detected settings. Steam players can also try launching in Safe Mode, as Bethesda describes in its performance troubleshooting steps.
- Verify files and revisit drivers and DirectX. If the earlier checks did not help, repair the installation and check current GPU-driver guidance and DirectX components.
- Look for a conflicting Windows program. If the issue persists, Bethesda suggests testing with a new Windows user profile. If the game works there, its selective-startup instructions can help identify software that conflicts with the game.
Use a known workaround only when the symptom matches
Bethesda’s DOOM: The Dark Ages Troubleshooting Guide lists conditional workarounds. They are not general fixes for every crash or performance problem.
- The game launches in the background after you Alt-Tab during startup: For the NVIDIA issue listed in the guide, avoid Alt-Tab while the game is starting. If it happens, restart the PC.
- The game crashes while OBS is running: Close OBS before launching.
- OBS capture visuals freeze after Alt-Tab from Fullscreen: Switch the game to Windowed or Borderless mode, the guide’s documented workaround.
- Instability occurs with MSI Afterburner or RivaTuner: Do not run either program’s overlay in the background while playing.
- The window is invisible but audio plays: For the display configurations described by Bethesda, Steam users can try the launch options
+r_mode -1 +r_fullscreen 0. On Battle.net or the Xbox app for PC, force quit the app and turn on all connected monitors before relaunching. - Fullscreen freezes after Alt-Tab on an NVIDIA 50-series GPU with driver 576.40 and FSR Frame Generation: The guide advises avoiding frequent Alt-Tab, using Borderless mode, or disabling FSR Frame Generation. This workaround applies to the listed hardware, driver, and feature combination; it should not be generalized to other systems.
- Crashes began after a recent AMD driver update: A later official Steam announcement suggests reinstalling the driver and selecting the factory-reset option. Check current AMD instructions before doing so; a clean driver reset changes existing driver settings.
The same guide mentions rare persistent launch crashes on supported settings with 13th- or 14th-generation Intel CPUs and directs affected users to Intel Customer Support, noting the CPU may be corrupted. A crash alone does not establish CPU damage; do not infer that your processor needs replacement from this symptom.

When the checks do not resolve the problem
Note the exact symptom, when it happens, your CPU and GPU models, driver version, Windows version, launcher, display mode, and any recent changes such as a driver update, mod, or graphics-setting change. Include these details when contacting Bethesda Support; they help distinguish a launch failure from a hardware limit or a symptom-specific conflict.
