To work toward playing VALORANT Competitive after watching Champions, first learn the round objective, practice moving and shooting, and get comfortable with one agent. Use Unrated or Swiftplay to build those habits, then check the Competitive queue in your client for its current access requirements; Riot’s beginner guide does not specify an unlock threshold.
Learn how a round works
VALORANT alternates between attacker and defender rounds. Attackers try to plant the Spike and let it detonate; defenders try to prevent the plant or defuse the Spike if it is planted. Winning rounds means more than finding opponents: pay attention to the objective, where your team is positioned, and how much time remains.
Before each round, the buy phase gives you a chance to spend credits on weapons and abilities. Treat purchases as part of the round plan: consider what you can afford and what will help your team attempt or stop the objective. Riot’s Beginner’s Guide, published August 2, 2024, introduces the round flow and buying weapons and abilities.
Start with one agent and a clear role
Agents have distinct abilities and roles. You do not need to unlock or master every agent before learning the game. Choose one whose abilities make sense to you, learn what they can help your team accomplish, and use them with a purpose—such as supporting a push or helping hold an area—rather than treating abilities as a replacement for gunfights.

As you learn, notice what your team needs. Complementary duties can help a team, but a beginner’s first job is to understand their own agent and contribute to the round objective.
Build movement and shooting habits in low-pressure modes
Riot’s beginner advice is to stop moving before firing, because movement affects accuracy. In practice games, focus on taking a moment to settle before a shot instead of spraying while running. Also consider whether running will reveal your approach and whether an ability can help with the next objective.

Use Unrated or Swiftplay to learn the flow of rounds and try agents without Competitive Rank Rating pressure. Riot’s guide recommends those modes for players who want a break from Competitive. Treat each game as practice: pay attention to when your team buys, where fights happen, and how the Spike objective shapes decisions.
Communicate useful information
Communication does not require voice chat. Riot’s guide identifies voice chat, location pings, and agent voice lines as ways to share information. Use whichever option is comfortable and available to give teammates relevant information, such as where you spotted an opponent or where you plan to go. A headset with a microphone is optional, not a prerequisite.

Check current Competitive access in the game
Do not rely on an old level or match-count requirement found in a guide or forum post. Riot’s beginner guide does not state the Competitive unlock requirement, and the current threshold is not established here. Check the Competitive queue in your VALORANT client or Riot Support for the requirement that applies when you play.

Competitive maps rotate, so learning the general round and objective flow is more durable than memorizing a list presented as permanent. Riot’s Patch 12.08 notes, published April 28, 2026, said Ascent entered and Bind left the Competitive and Deathmatch map queues in that patch. That is a dated rotation notice, not confirmation of the live map pool today; check the in-client queue for the current maps.
