If you’re looking for “Slaughter Mode” in DOOM: The Dark Ages, look for the Ripatorium instead. That is the official name used in Bethesda’s update notes; those sources do not verify “Slaughter Mode” as a menu label or alternate name. The base Ripatorium lets you build custom demon encounters, while later Ripatorium 2.0 features add rounds, presets, and beta passcode sharing.
Where is “Slaughter Mode”?
“Slaughter Mode” is not confirmed as an official name in the available Bethesda materials. The custom combat arena is called the Ripatorium. Bethesda introduced it in Update 2, released August 7, 2025, as an arena where players create their own fights through an Encounter Manager. See the official Update 2 release notes.
How to access the base Ripatorium
- Update the game. The Ripatorium was added in Update 2.
- Open the Ripatorium. Bethesda’s notes identify the feature but do not document a precise menu-button sequence, so the exact route may depend on the game’s menus and platform.
- Use the Encounter Manager. Choose an arena, select demon types and quantities, and configure enemy respawns.
- Set the encounter’s length. Choose a time limit or turn on Endless mode, then start the fight.
The base mode offers three arenas: City of Ry’uul, Village of Khalim, and Harbor of Souls. A jukebox lets you select a DOOM: The Dark Ages music track for the encounter. Update 2 does not state that campaign completion is required to enter the base Ripatorium.
What changed in Ripatorium 2.0?
Update 3, released November 18, 2025, made the mode round-based. Configure up to five rounds, with up to 10 respawn waves in each round; rounds can have different settings. The update also added presets named Medium, Challenging, and Sadistic, which Bethesda says can be used with any difficulty level. Read the official Update 3 release notes.

Passcode sharing is identified as beta. To try another player’s encounter, select the relevant round and use Enter New Passcode at the bottom of the screen. Update 3 also added five jukebox tracks and an end-of-level summary with Difficulty and Arena Setup tabs.

The Master Arenas unlock requirement applies to the Revelations expansion content, not to the base Ripatorium. Bethesda’s official DOOM: The Dark Ages Steam announcements describe the expansion unlock and additions.

Custom encounter, preset, or shared passcode?
- Build a custom encounter in the Encounter Manager when you want to choose the demons, quantities, respawns, and time or Endless setting yourself.
- Choose a preset for a ready-made setup. Ripatorium 2.0 includes Medium, Challenging, and Sadistic presets; Revelations adds six curated presets.
- Enter a passcode to play another player’s shared encounter. Passcode sharing is beta, and the game’s instructions specify selecting a round and using Enter New Passcode.
The official notes describe these options but do not provide comparative performance or difficulty testing, so treat preset names as labels rather than a measured guarantee of how hard a fight will feel.
