Consider buying Revelations if you want its separate campaign, Chain Spear combat and endgame activities—or plan to play Slaughter Mode. Reporting as of October 4, 2026 says the upcoming mode requires Revelations, not just the base game, and is planned for November. If you only want the original campaign, the Standard Edition is the more direct choice; you can decide on the expansion separately.
What does Revelations add?
Revelations is a campaign expansion for DOOM: The Dark Ages, released July 7, 2026, alongside Update 4. Bethesda describes the update as including the expansion, Ripatorium 3.0, quality-of-life changes and bug fixes. Bethesda’s Revelations news index has the release and update entries.
In a July 1 preview, Xbox Wire reported that Game Director Hugo Martin estimated the expansion at 10–12 hours. That is a pre-release estimate, not a guaranteed playtime or an independent timing. The preview describes the content as roughly 60% story campaign and 40% endgame activities. Xbox Wire’s preview also outlines what those activities and combat changes involve.
The Chain Spear and campaign
The Chain Spear replaces the shield at the start of the expansion’s campaign. It brings different attacks and movement options, including a grapple-like pull; the shield can be swapped back in later. The new weapon is the clearest reason to consider Revelations if you want a different combat rhythm from the base game.

Arenas and Ripatorium
The preview describes a hub with secrets, challenges and puzzles, plus an uber boss, master arenas and new Ripatorium content. Existing difficulty sliders remain available, according to Xbox Wire. These additions give the expansion more to do beyond its story, but the available information does not establish how satisfying or replayable they will feel to you.
Does Slaughter Mode require Revelations?
According to reporting published October 2, 2026, yes: Slaughter Mode requires ownership of Revelations. It was announced as a free update for expansion owners, with release planned for November 2026. No exact release day had been confirmed by October 4, so treat the timing as a plan rather than a date certain. TrueAchievements’ report describes an endless single-player challenge built around escalating demon waves across multiple arenas, personal round and score records, cosmetic unlocks and weekly challenges.

Which edition should you buy?

|---|---|---|
| Standard Edition | Base game | Players who want the original campaign and do not yet want Revelations. |

These are the contents listed by Bethesda; check your platform’s store before purchase to confirm the edition, availability and entitlements. The physical items are collector extras, not gameplay requirements.

How to decide based on what you already own
If you do not own the game
- Choose Standard if you only want to play the base campaign or prefer to decide on the expansion later.
- Choose Premium if you already know you want Revelations. Its inclusion avoids buying the DLC separately, but compare the current prices on your platform rather than assuming the bundle is cheaper.
- Choose the Collector’s Bundle for its physical items, not to gain an additional gameplay advantage over Premium.
If you already own the base game
Check whether your edition already includes Revelations. Bethesda lists the expansion in Premium Edition and the Collector’s Bundle, while Standard is listed as the base game only. If your edition does not include it, the Premium Upgrade or separate DLC are the relevant options; confirm the exact entitlement in your store.
If Slaughter Mode is your main reason
Revelations is the reported access requirement, so a base-game purchase alone is not enough for the announced mode. If you are unsure about paying for the expansion before trying its campaign and combat, wait until Slaughter Mode is available and its release details are confirmed. The cited announcement reporting does not provide an exact November day.

Where can you play it?
Bethesda Support lists Xbox Series X|S, Xbox App for Windows PC, Steam, Battle.net and PlayStation 5. Its support information also notes access through Game Pass Ultimate, including PC Game Pass, and GeForce NOW. Platform availability and subscription catalogs can vary or change, so check the store or service you intend to use. Bethesda Support’s platform page lists the supported options.
Verdict: is it worth buying?
Revelations is a reasonable buy if its campaign, Chain Spear, arenas and Ripatorium content appeal to you, or if you want access to the reported Slaughter Mode update. If you only want the original campaign, stick with the base game and consider the DLC later. The available descriptions and developer estimate explain what Revelations contains, but they cannot establish whether its combat or activities are worth the price for your tastes; compare the current platform-store price with the content you expect to play.
