To check whether a Secret Lair card is authentic, inspect its print quality, color, edges, finish, and texture, then compare it with a known genuine card from the same printing. Wizards of the Coast’s published advice is general Magic counterfeit guidance—not a Secret Lair-specific authentication checklist—so no single home check can prove a card genuine.
Start with a careful, like-for-like comparison
Use a known genuine copy of the same card and printing if possible. Wizards of the Coast notes that Magic printings can vary, so a color difference by itself is not proof of counterfeiting. Compare the suspect card under the same lighting and look at the overall printing rather than treating one mismatch as decisive.
- Print quality: Look for inconsistent or bleeding edges around colored lettering and symbols. Wizards’ general guide, “Buyer Beware” (April 26, 2004), calls out the black-and-red edge of the word “Magic” on a card back as one place to inspect.
- Color and finish: Note unusual color, gloss, or surface appearance, but account for differences between printings and special treatments.
- Edges, texture, and wear: Inspect the card as a whole for unusual edge defects, texture, or wear. These can be clues, not proof on their own.
A magnifier may make print patterns or irregularities easier to see, but it is only an aid for inspection—not an authentication instrument.
Use light transmission only as a comparison
Wizards’ guide describes comparing how much light passes through a nonfoil suspect card with a known genuine card under the same conditions. Treat the result as one observation, not a verdict: the guidance does not establish a universal light-transmission threshold, and this comparison is for nonfoil cards.

Avoid tests that can damage the card
Do not bend, wet, or tear a potentially valuable Secret Lair card as a routine check. Wizards warns that repeated bending can crease genuine cards and says not to use the bend test on foils. Its guide also says the water test is unsuitable for foils; wetting can affect a card. Tearing is destructive.
Know what Secret Lair-specific guidance does—and does not—say
Secret Lair is an official Wizards of the Coast Magic product line, described by the company in its “Secret Lair Recap” (November 26, 2019). The cited official counterfeit guidance does not provide a separate Secret Lair authentication checklist or establish a Secret Lair-specific security mark. Do not rely on a particular stamp, foil pattern, package, or other feature as proof unless current official information verifies it.

Ask an experienced Magic card dealer or retailer
If the card remains uncertain, seek an experienced dealer’s or retailer’s opinion. Wizards identifies people who regularly handle cards as possible resources, but this is an opinion rather than formal certification. The company’s guide also says Wizards employees cannot consult on individual authenticity questions.
