If your steering or buttons feel delayed, first find out whether the controller is registering inputs correctly, then compare connection modes, game settings, frame delivery and display settings. Change one thing at a time: controller-to-screen delay can come from several parts of the setup, and no single setting fixes every case.
What kind of delay are you experiencing?
“Input lag” can mean the time before a game reads a button or stick movement, or the broader time before that input appears on screen. A steering dead zone or unsuitable sensitivity curve can also make a car feel unresponsive without proving that input transmission is slow.
Before changing settings, note which controls feel late—steering, throttle or brake, or all of them—and whether the issue is constant, occurs with stutter, or appears in just one game. Record the controller mode, frame-rate behavior, display refresh rate and any Steam Input configuration so you can compare changes against the same baseline.
Test whether the controller registers inputs
Check buttons and sticks in Windows or Steam before adjusting graphics. In Windows, use the controller test available through the device’s properties. In Steam, open Steam > Settings > Controller > Test Input. Microsoft documents both approaches in its Windows guide to connecting a controller to a PC.

- If buttons fail to register, stick movement drops out, or inputs are inconsistent in the test, focus on charge, pairing, cable and port, controller firmware or manufacturer support. A hardware fault is also possible.
- If the test is clean but one racing game feels delayed, inspect that game’s controller support, selected layout, dead zone and input configuration.
- If the problem occurs in multiple games, compare connection modes and check whether frame stutter or the display setup coincides with the delay.
Compare wired and wireless connections
If your controller supports wired USB data, connect it directly to the PC with a compatible data-capable cable. Compare it with wireless in the same game, scene and display settings, keeping frame-rate conditions as similar as possible. Microsoft says, “Most controllers — Xbox, PlayStation, and many third‑party options — support USB connections,” but connector type and wired-data support vary by model.
A wired comparison is a diagnostic, not proof that USB is always faster. If the symptom changes, check that the wireless controller is charged and paired with the PC rather than another device; re-pair it and, where relevant, reduce nearby Bluetooth-device congestion. Follow the connection recommendations for your specific controller. For example, Steam’s 2026 Steam Controller documentation describes that product’s Puck, Bluetooth and wired USB-C options; its Puck guidance is not a general recommendation for other controllers.

Check whether USB ports or attached devices matter
If the controller behaves differently on different USB ports, or the problem changes when other USB devices are connected, try another port and temporarily disconnect unnecessary devices or hubs. Steam describes a possible USB scheduling or contention issue in some setups; changing ports or rearranging connected devices can affect the result. Treat this as a targeted test, not a universal fix.
Check the game’s controller and remapping settings
Confirm that the racing game supports gamepads and that its in-game control preset is the one you intend to use. Check steering dead zone and sensitivity as well: a large dead zone or unsuitable curve can make small corrections feel sluggish even when inputs register normally.

For a game launched through Steam, inspect its per-title controller or Steam Input configuration. Avoid stacking multiple remapping utilities while troubleshooting. If the issue involves Steam Controller behavior, Steam’s legacy Steam Controller troubleshooting guidance identifies the overlay, selected input style, other connected peripherals and conflicting programs as areas to check. Those notes are product-specific and legacy, so use them as diagnostic ideas rather than assuming a listed program causes lag for everyone. Test with other controllers or peripherals disconnected, and disable overlays or suspected conflicting software one at a time; re-enable changes individually to identify what matters.
Check frame delivery, refresh rate and VSync
Watch for stutter or unstable frame delivery when the controller feels delayed. Also confirm in Windows that the display is set to its intended refresh rate. Refresh rate, measured in hertz, and the game’s frame rate, measured in frames per second, are different; a display’s advertised maximum is not necessarily its current setting.

In the affected game, test VSync and any available latency or presentation options one at a time. Judge both response and image quality: Steam notes that disabling VSync can cause tearing or other visual artifacts. Windows 11’s windowed-game optimizations describe a compatible flip-model path that can reduce frame latency for supported games and displays. That option may help frame presentation, but it does not by itself diagnose a controller-input problem.

- Establish a baseline: note which controls feel late, whether the issue affects one or several games, and whether it appears with stutter.
- Test input registration: use Windows device properties or Steam > Settings > Controller > Test Input.
- Compare connection modes: if supported, test wired USB data against wireless without changing the game scene or display settings.
- Test USB topology: try another port and temporarily remove unnecessary peripherals if port or device changes seem relevant.
- Inspect game and software settings: verify the gamepad preset, dead zone, sensitivity and per-title Steam Input configuration; avoid overlapping remappers.
- Check frame and display behavior: confirm refresh rate, observe stutter, and test VSync or other available presentation options separately.
Fixes to treat with skepticism
There is no established universal controller-to-screen latency ranking for common gamepads, wired versus Bluetooth connections, racing games and PC displays, and the official guidance cited here does not support a general claim about milliseconds saved. Avoid registry tweaks, controller overclocking, USB polling-rate overrides, disabling Windows GameInput services or adopting a fixed polling rate based only on forum anecdotes.

Microsoft’s Dynamic Latency Input documentation specifies that the feature is for Xbox consoles and is unavailable on PC, so PC players cannot enable it as a fix.
