Action RPG Combat for Beginners: How to Choose Between Simple and Complex Systems

Action RPG complexity can mean precise, reactive fights or deeper skills and equipment planning. Learn what to check before choosing a game.

Choose an action RPG by the kind of complexity you want to learn. Some games ask you to read attacks, move and time dodges; others put more of their depth into skills, stats and equipment choices. A game may be straightforward at first but offer elaborate character-building later, or demand careful encounter play while still giving you ways to change your approach. Look at how the game teaches, how costly mistakes feel and what difficulty or accessibility options are available—not just whether it is called “easy” or “hard.”

What does “complex combat” mean to you?

For beginners, “complex” can describe two different kinds of work: what you do from moment to moment, and what you decide about your character between encounters. A player looking for an ARPG where the action is “more skilful like Hades and not just repeatedly clicking a mouse” is describing a preference for active execution. That is one community member’s phrasing, not a survey or an objective definition of skill.

Execution: what you do during a fight

Consider how often combat asks you to respond in real time. Do you need to notice an enemy’s attack cue, move out of danger, time a dodge, manage distance and choose when to strike? Or is the main work selecting abilities and positioning while attacks resolve with less precise timing? These are observable differences; “skillful” and “mashy” are subjective labels.

Build planning: what you decide for your character

Look at how many skills, stats, equipment effects and interactions you must understand to make a character that progresses comfortably. A game can keep the controls approachable while giving players substantial choices about how abilities and equipment work together. Conversely, simple-looking equipment decisions can become more involved as the game introduces specialized effects.

How to judge whether a game will be beginner-friendly

Check how decisions are introduced

New systems are easier to learn when the game introduces them gradually and lets you see why a choice matters. Also ask whether a suboptimal skill or equipment choice is recoverable, or whether it can make progress frustrating. Blizzard’s 2019 Diablo IV itemization post described an intent to make basic upgrades easy to recognize while leaving room for deeper optimization. Lead systems designer David Kim called the philosophy “Easy to learn, difficult to master.” The post explicitly described early, provisional design ideas, so it is evidence of design intent—not a guide to the released game’s current item systems.

Consider what a failed attempt costs

A demanding fight can still be approachable if you can explore elsewhere, return later, seek help or try a different approach. In a pre-release PlayStation Blog interview, FromSoftware president and game director Hidetaka Miyazaki described learning enemy behavior and mistakes as part of overcoming challenges, and said players could leave an impasse and come back later. He said, “We don’t try to force difficulty or make things hard for the sake of it,” and encouraged players to study what is happening and learn from mistakes. This explains the intended approach, but it does not establish a universal beginner difficulty rating for Elden Ring.

Separate adjustability from the base combat system

Difficulty modifiers, progression help, readable cues, control options and accessibility features can make a game more accommodating. They do not, by themselves, show that its underlying combat is mechanically simple. Supergiant’s Hades FAQ describes God Mode, permanent progression and other modifiers. Blizzard’s Diablo IV accessibility article describes features including enemy and player highlighting and a built-in screen reader. Settings can vary by platform or change over time, so check the version you play for the options actually available.

Three examples of different kinds of depth

Game What it illustrates What the evidence does not establish
Diablo IV How accessible entry-level item choices and more involved build optimization can be different layers of complexity. Blizzard’s 2019 post describes this as a design aim. The post is provisional development-era commentary, not confirmation of current item details or a guarantee that every system is beginner-friendly.
Elden Ring How challenging encounter play can coexist with learning, choosing when to return and finding other ways to approach an obstacle, as Miyazaki described in a pre-release interview. The interview does not establish a universal beginner difficulty rating or prove that every player will find its combat manageable.
Hades How an action-focused game can offer active combat alongside ways to adjust challenge. Supergiant describes God Mode, permanent progression and other modifiers. The FAQ is not a head-to-head comparison with other games and does not establish that Hades is easier or harder than another ARPG.

A practical way to choose

  1. Pick the kind of practice you enjoy. If you want to improve at recognizing cues, moving and timing actions, prioritize execution. If you enjoy trying combinations of skills and equipment, prioritize build planning.
  2. Look for room to recover. Check whether you can change direction, revisit a difficult obstacle later or get help rather than being required to repeat one approach.
  3. Inspect how the game teaches. Tutorials and gradual introductions can make a system easier to learn even when it becomes deep later. Find out whether early choices are forgiving before committing to a build.
  4. Check adjustable settings on your platform. Confirm which difficulty, progression and accessibility options are present in the version you intend to play; do not assume that a feature is identical across platforms or updates.
  5. Judge the specific demand, not the label. “Easy,” “hard” and “complex” compress several different experiences. Decide whether the game’s particular demands sound enjoyable to practice.

Why there is no single simple-to-complex ranking

Execution and build planning are separate axes, and a game can be demanding on one without being equally demanding on the other. Teaching, mistake costs, player options and settings also change how those demands feel. The cited publisher and developer materials explain design intentions or describe features; they are not a controlled comparison of beginner outcomes. There is no sound basis here for assigning numerical difficulty scores or claiming that one combat style is preferred by most players.
