On PC, switching The Witcher 3 between the Classic branch and newer releases depends on your store: Steam and GOG Galaxy provide rollback options, while Epic Games Store does not, according to CD PROJEKT RED’s support instructions. The naming has since changed: the game’s September 2026 Remastered release is distinct from the 2022 Next-Gen update, so check the precise version you want before changing branches.
Choose the right version and platform first
“Classic” refers to the older PC version, identified in a recent hotfix note as Classic (1.32). “Next-Gen” usually refers to the 2022 update 4.0, while CD PROJEKT RED released The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt — Remastered on September 29, 2026. Do not assume that an older instruction to switch between Classic and Next-Gen also describes a selector for Remastered. The publisher’s release announcement says Remastered is a free upgrade for owners on GOG, Steam, Epic Games Store, PS5, and Xbox Series X|S, and for Switch 2 players who own the original Switch game; on supported platforms it replaces Complete Edition and includes both expansions, Hearts of Stone and Blood and Wine. The available rollback instructions are for PC storefronts. They do not establish a console procedure for choosing Classic, Next-Gen, or Remastered.
Switch versions on Steam
- Open your Steam Library and right-click The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, then choose Properties.
- Open Betas and select CLASSIC to move to the older branch.
- To return to the latest version Steam makes available, revisit Betas and select None.
These are the labels in CD PROJEKT RED’s official rollback instructions. Launcher labels and branch availability can change; check what Steam currently offers if the options differ.

Switch versions in GOG Galaxy
- Open Installed, select The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, then choose Manage installation → Configure.
- Under Beta channels, select Classic.
- Turn off automatic updates, choose the version you want, and confirm.
- To return to the latest version, set Beta channels to Disabled.
Follow the current options shown in GOG Galaxy if labels or available versions have changed since the support instructions were published.
Can you roll back on Epic Games Store?
CD PROJEKT RED’s support instructions say Epic Games Store provides only the latest available version and does not offer rollback to an earlier one. If you need Classic (1.32), the cited guidance does not provide an Epic branch-selection method.

What to know about saves and compatibility
The support page warns that only the latest version is fully compatible, because it includes the newest improvements, fixes, and changes. It does not say that switching versions necessarily deletes or damages saves. As a precaution, keep a separate backup of important saves before changing branches; that is prudent practice, not a claim that a switch causes save loss.
The 2022 Next-Gen announcement describes visual, performance, and technical improvements in update 4.0 for PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X|S, with scope varying by platform. It also explains cross-progression: after signing in, the game uploads the latest save for each save type. The announcement’s wording is: “Cross-progression provides the latest save for every save type.” Read the 2022 update details for that release’s features.

Transfer a save from PS4 to PS5
Save transfer is separate from switching a console between editions or versions. CD PROJEKT RED’s instructions describe moving a save from the PS4 game to the PS5 Next-Gen version using cross-progression:
- Update the PS4 version to 4.04.
- On PS4, connect through My Rewards to your CD PROJEKT RED account.
- Make a save and confirm it displays a cloud icon.
- Connect the PS5 Next-Gen version to the same account. The uploaded save should appear under Load Game.

What console players can and cannot conclude
The cited official materials do not provide step-by-step instructions for selecting Classic versus Next-Gen on PS5, Xbox, Nintendo Switch, or Switch 2. They also do not establish that consoles expose the same branch menus as PC launchers. Check the version-management options on your platform or contact CD PROJEKT RED support rather than applying the Steam or GOG steps to a console.
A recent PC hotfix note confirms that the label “Classic (1.32)” remains in use: on October 1, 2026, CD PROJEKT RED said it fixed an issue preventing that version from launching. That note confirms the label, but does not describe every store’s current branch menu. See the October 1 hotfix note.
