If The Witcher 3 stopped launching, a save will not load, or mods broke after you changed game versions, start by noting your storefront and installed version. Rollback controls vary by Steam, GOG Galaxy, and Epic Games Store; launch failures and mod conflicts need different checks. Preserve a copy of your save folder before troubleshooting so you have an unchanged copy of your files.
First, identify what changed
Write down whether you use Steam, GOG Galaxy, or Epic Games Store, the game version shown by your launcher, and whether you use in-game mods, third-party mods, trainers, or console commands. Those details help distinguish a storefront or launcher problem from a game, save, or mod issue, and CD PROJEKT RED requests them when players report launch problems.
The support form showed version choices 5.0 (Latest), 4.04, and 1.32 when its guidance was captured. These are form options, not confirmation that 5.0 is currently the latest build for every platform. Can you revert to an earlier version?
CD PROJEKT RED documents rollback controls for Steam and GOG Galaxy, but says Epic Games Store does not permit rolling back to an earlier version. The instructions below reflect the publisher’s Spanish-language support article; launcher labels and available builds may change, so check the current rollback instructions for the labels available to you.

The same support article calls the latest version the only compatible version and recommends updating if a problem occurred on an older version. Treat that as the publisher’s general support guidance, not a specific ruling that every save from a newer build will fail on every older one.
Game is not launching
First check whether the game itself fails to start or REDlauncher fails before the game opens. The fixes differ. If you can reach the game but it crashes during startup, update your graphics-card drivers. If the problem persists, CD PROJEKT RED’s launch form points to a clean install and support escalation; neither step is a guaranteed fix.

If REDlauncher will not open
- Close the launcher. Run your store platform—Steam, Epic Games, or GOG Galaxy—as administrator, then try again.
- If it still fails, delete the REDlauncher folder at
%localappdata%ProgramsCD Projekt Red. - Remove any launch parameters set for the game in the storefront, then retry.
- If REDlauncher still fails, contact CD PROJEKT RED support.
These are the publisher’s listed steps for REDlauncher problems. They are separate from updating GPU drivers or performing a clean install for a game launch crash.
If the game executable crashes or does not start
- Install the latest GPU drivers, as advised by the official launch support form.
- If the problem continues, consider a clean install and report the issue through the support form.
- Include your platform and game version, and say whether you used mods, trainers, or console commands. The form also asks for a DxDiag report.
A save will not load after changing versions
CD PROJEKT RED’s rollback instructions do not establish whether a save made on a newer game version will load after you downgrade, and they do not provide a rollback-specific backup procedure. Do not assume either that the save is compatible or that it is incompatible. Before switching versions, make a separate copy of your save folder as ordinary file-safety practice; this is a precaution, not a publisher-confirmed compatibility fix.

On Windows, the support form gives the save location as %userprofile%DocumentsThe Witcher 3gamesaves. Each save consists of a .sav file and a same-name .png image. Keep the pair together. If you report a gameplay issue, CD PROJEKT RED asks you to compress and attach the relevant files.
The support index lists separate help for cross-progression and loading cross-progression saves. Those topics concern cross-progression; they do not establish whether a PC save works after changing the installed game version.

Mods caused a crash or unexpected behavior
CD PROJEKT RED warns that mods can cause crashes, prevent launch, or produce other unexpected behavior, including after a game update. Start by separating mods installed through the in-game Mods menu from third-party PC mods installed outside it.
For mods installed through the in-game menu
- Disable or unsubscribe from the in-game mods, then check whether the problem persists.
- If the issue stops, report it to the mod creator on the mod’s page.
- If it continues, bear in mind that consequences of earlier mod use may remain in the save even after the mod is disabled. The publisher says an earlier save from before mod use may be needed.
CD PROJEKT RED support advises: “We advise against installing mods that alter quest structure mid-playthrough.”

For third-party PC mods
For mods installed outside the in-game Mods menu, CD PROJEKT RED’s instruction is to perform a clean install. Removing a mod alone is not established as a way to reverse changes it may have written into a save.
Where to report a mod problem
For mod-content reports, use the mod page’s Report button or mod.io/report. If you suspect a problem with the game itself, report it through CD PROJEKT RED support.
When to contact support
Contact CD PROJEKT RED if the game still fails after the relevant launch steps, or if you need help diagnosing a gameplay issue. Have your storefront, installed version, platform, and details about mods, trainers, or console commands ready. For a save-related gameplay report, include the relevant paired save files in a compressed archive; for launch trouble, the form requests a DxDiag report.
