1. Check whether the problem is PlayStation Network or your home Wi-Fi
Before changing your router, check the PlayStation Network status page for an outage or maintenance. If services are unavailable, changing your home Wi-Fi settings is unlikely to help.
If services are operating, confirm that the PS5 is connected to the intended network and that the password and security method are correct. To select a wireless network, open Settings > Network > Settings > Set Up Internet Connection, choose your SSID (network name), and connect.
One specific compatibility issue is an IPv6-only network: Sony says PS5 supports IPv6 connections but not networks using IPv6 exclusively. If your router is configured as IPv6-only, change it to use IPv4 as well; this is a compatibility fix, not a general Wi-Fi speed setting.

2. Improve the Wi-Fi signal where the PS5 is located
Move the console closer to the router and remove objects that block or interfere with the signal. The useful test is the console’s actual gaming position: a connection that works well beside the router may be unstable across a room or behind obstructions.
Restarting network equipment can also clear a temporary connection problem. For the restart procedure in Sony’s NW-102633-5 troubleshooting guidance, turn off the router and modem, wait at least five minutes, then turn them back on.

Test the available Wi-Fi bands rather than assuming one is best
Sony’s PS5 safety guide identifies 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz Wi-Fi. It notes that the 2.4 GHz range is shared by various devices, and interference can reduce speed or range or cause a connection to drop. The guide does not establish one band as universally better for gaming or provide a latency comparison. If your router offers both, test each from the console’s normal location and keep the one that behaves more reliably there.
3. Compare Wi-Fi with a wired connection
If you can safely run a cable to the router, Ethernet is a practical way to find out whether the local Wi-Fi link is contributing to the problem. It bypasses that wireless link, but it does not guarantee a particular ping or speed improvement: results depend on the rest of the connection and the game service.

To connect by cable, use Settings > Network > Settings > Set Up Internet Connection > Set Up Wired LAN > Connect. Sony recommends trying a wired connection when troubleshooting, and its safety guide lists Ethernet compatibility with 10BASE-T, 100BASE-TX, and 1000BASE-T networks.

4. Check MLO only on a compatible PS5 Pro
Multi-Link Operation (MLO) is an option for PS5 Pro consoles in the CFI-7000 model group when the access point also supports MLO. Sony’s internet connection setup guide suggests that PS5 Pro users with connection issues compare the connection with MLO enabled and disabled. Treat this as a controlled troubleshooting test, not a setting available or appropriate for every PS5.

5. Escalate advanced network changes only for a diagnosed problem
Sony’s error-specific instructions list router firmware updates, port filtering, manual static-IP setup, and—in its NW-102417-5 timeout guidance—a temporary DNS change. These are troubleshooting steps for particular connection errors, not routine ways to make every game run with lower lag. Sony advises users unfamiliar with advanced settings to contact their ISP or network administrator.
If basic checks have not resolved a persistent problem, record whether it occurs on Wi-Fi only or also on Ethernet, along with any PS5 error code. Give that information to your ISP or network administrator before changing port rules, IP settings, or DNS; they can check the router configuration and explain which change, if any, fits the failure.
