If you’ve watched professional League of Legends and want to try it yourself, start with the basics—not pro-level mechanics. Learn the Summoner’s Rift objective, get comfortable with controls against bots, and move into player-versus-player games when you’re ready. Your first goal is to understand what’s happening while controlling one champion.
Understand the objective before worrying about mechanics
League of Legends is a five-versus-five team strategy game. On Summoner’s Rift, teams move through lanes, fight with champions, and push toward the opposing base. The central objective is to destroy the enemy Nexus. Riot’s official beginner guide introduces the game’s core mode and essentials.
Esports broadcasts show the coordinated result of many players’ decisions. When you play, you also have to move your champion, control the camera, use abilities, and make choices in real time. Treat learning those tasks as progress; don’t use professional execution or winning as your first measure of success.
Use a gradual first-match route
- Start with Riot’s beginner essentials or tutorial. Use the controls and basic match objective as your first orientation, rather than trying to imitate a full professional match. See Riot’s beginner guide.
- Practice in Co-op versus AI. You play with teammates against bots, giving you room to learn the map and match flow without human opponents on the other team. Riot describes the mode as a lower-pressure place for newer players to learn and grow, with bots intended to feel more like ordinary Summoner’s Rift gameplay. Details are on Riot’s Co-op versus AI support page.
- Try Swiftplay when you’re ready for PvP. Swiftplay keeps much of the traditional Summoner’s Rift experience while offering a faster, lower-stakes way to play against people. Riot introduced it with learners and returning players in mind. In the announcement, League design director Bryan “Riot Axes” Salvatore described it as “a fast queue that still allows you to experience the full arc of what League can offer.” Read Riot’s Swiftplay announcement. Availability and queue arrangements can change, so check the live client in your region.
- Pick one learning goal for each game. For example, focus on moving around the map, using your abilities, or noticing when teams gather. This is a practical way to keep early games manageable, not an official Riot checklist.
Choose a mode by the kind of practice you want
| Mode | What you practice | Opponent pressure |
|---|---|---|
| Co-op versus AI | Summoner’s Rift basics and match flow with teammates | You play against bots rather than a human opposing team; Riot presents it as a learning space for newer players. |
| Swiftplay | A faster, lower-stakes version of much of the traditional Summoner’s Rift flow | Player-versus-player. Riot designed the mode for people who want that experience with less pressure. |
These modes have not had a fixed relationship in every patch. Riot’s patch 26.3 notes say Co-op versus AI had been changed to use Swiftplay instead of normal Summoner’s Rift, then explain that Riot reverted the change after queue times increased. Use the current client to see which queues are available rather than relying on an older description.

Turn esports watching into a specific learning aid
Watching can make abilities, team fights, and map movement feel familiar, but observing a decision is different from making it while operating the game. Choose one thing to notice—such as how a player uses a combo or responds to a fight—and then practice that idea in a match. Riot’s 2018 new-player discussion mentions streamers and YouTube creators as a way to learn combos. That is a limited suggestion, not a complete current learning curriculum.
Keep the gap between watching and playing in perspective: broadcasts show coordinated play, while your early games are for getting used to your own controls, abilities, and decisions. A win is welcome, but it isn’t necessary for a game to teach you something useful.
