A practical beginner champion pool is Garen for top, Warwick for jungle, Annie for mid, Ashe for ADC, and Leona for support. Treat these as approachable starting points, not a definitive ranking or a claim about the strongest champions on the current patch. The lineup reflects recent beginner guides; Riot’s own advice is to choose a champion whose style appeals to you, rather than picking one just because it seems strong right now.
How to choose a beginner champion
A useful first champion makes it easier to learn what your role asks of you. Look for a kit whose purpose is easy to understand, manageable mechanical demands, and some room to recover from mistakes. Those are practical selection criteria described by a recent beginner guide, not an official Riot difficulty score or a measured ranking.
Riot Player Support recommends that new players try Ashe, Ryze, or Garen to understand the basics, while also cautioning against buying a champion solely for its abilities or current balance situation. That advice is general; it is not a current, role-by-role starter list. Riot’s champion-selection advice also makes personal preference part of the choice.
League has five commonly recommended positions: top, jungle, mid, bot carry (often called ADC), and support. Riot’s role overview describes what those positions generally do, but role identity is a guide rather than a rigid rule. Riot’s How to Play guide provides the official overview.

This is an editorial starter pool supported by recent third-party guides, not a Riot-endorsed canonical list. The specific role picks and alternatives appear in Dodge.gg’s 2026 beginner champion guide; Games.gg’s September 2026 guide describes its selection criteria as mechanical difficulty, forgiveness, clarity of ability use, and how well a champion teaches the role. Neither guide establishes a reproducible dataset for which champion is objectively easiest.
Top: Garen
Garen is a direct starting point for learning solo-lane fundamentals: last-hitting minions, choosing when to trade, and backing out before a fight turns against you. If you want another option to explore, Malphite is also listed as a beginner alternative by the role-by-role guide.

Jungle: Warwick
Jungle differs from lane roles: you move between lanes while clearing camps and looking for opportunities to help teammates, and you must account for neutral monsters and objectives. Warwick is the suggested starting pick; Amumu is an alternative. Riot’s role overview explains the jungle and its neutral monsters.
Mid: Annie
Annie is a straightforward starting choice for mid. Use the role to learn lane fundamentals while getting a feel for the burst-damage focus Riot associates with mid laners. Lux is another option from the beginner guide.

Bot carry / ADC: Ashe
Ashe gives beginners a starting point for the ranged damage role. You still need to manage positioning: staying in a useful spot without exposing yourself unnecessarily is part of playing bot carry, regardless of which champion you choose. Miss Fortune is an alternative.
Support: Leona
Leona offers a clear engage-and-stun example, while support also involves responsibilities to the lane and team that are distinct from simply dealing damage. If you prefer another option, Soraka is listed as an alternative.

Build a pool you will actually play
If you want to be flexible across positions, learn at least one champion for each. Riot’s matchmaking guidance recommends familiarity with a champion in every position, which makes the five-pick pool above a useful starting structure rather than a required roster. Riot’s matchmaking and autofill guidance explains that recommendation.

- Start with the champion whose play style sounds most enjoyable; the list is a set of options, not a must-play order.
- Learn the role’s basic decisions before adding more champions. For top, that means solo-lane farming and trades; for jungle, moving between lanes and objectives; for bot carry, ranged damage and positioning; and for support, lane and team contribution.
- Keep balance separate from beginner suitability. These recommendations are not backed here by live-patch win rates, pick rates, or difficulty scores, and balance can change.
