In Deadlock, your team wins by advancing through lanes and destroying the opposing Patron. The basic match loop is to collect Souls from Troopers, spend those Souls to strengthen your hero, help your lane advance, and group with teammates when it is time to take objectives or push deeper. Since the game is still in development, treat exact mechanics and objective rewards as subject to change.
What you are trying to do
The goal is to destroy the enemy Patron. Lane Troopers and structures create the route toward the opposing base; secondary objectives can give your team an advantage, but they do not replace the Patron push.
The community-maintained Deadlock Wiki strategy guide describes three lanes, with two players initially assigned to each lane in its setup. Lane names and assignments can change with updates, so use the current in-game map and team setup rather than treating that arrangement as permanent.
How Souls work
Troopers release Souls when killed. Souls are used both to level up and to buy items, so collecting them consistently is the foundation of your early strength. Focus on securing the Soul orbs after Troopers fall; dealing damage or landing the final hit is not the whole task.

Prioritize dependable farm over a risky chase. If pursuing an unlikely kill means missing a wave or leaving a teammate exposed, the lost resources and lane pressure may cost more than the attempt is worth.
How to manage your lane
Stay near the wave and collect its Souls
Begin by keeping the nearest allied Trooper wave in view. Collect the Souls from fallen enemy Troopers while staying aware of your teammate and the opponents in lane. This gives you a steady resource base without abandoning the part of the map your team is trying to advance.

Deny the opposing lane when your Troopers fall
When an allied Trooper dies, its Soul orb can be shot to prevent the enemy from collecting it, according to the strategy guide. First make collecting your own Souls routine; then add denial when you can do it without giving up a safer farm opportunity or putting yourself in danger.
Use the wave to create pressure
Defeating enemy Troopers helps move the lane forward and supports broader map control. Before attacking a deeper structure, check whether allied Troopers are close enough to support the push. Attacking without lane pressure can expose you to opponents while your team has little support for the objective. Backdoor-protection rules and other structure mechanics are update-sensitive; check the current build rather than assuming a particular protection rule.

When to rotate and when to push
A useful match framework is early laning, midgame movement to assist teammates and work on objectives, then late fights and pressure toward the Patron. These are flexible phases, not fixed timer marks: the pace depends on how the match develops.
Rotating can help a teammate turn an advantage into a safer objective or a stronger lane push. Before leaving your lane, consider whether your presence is needed elsewhere and what pressure you give up by leaving. A successful rotation should improve the team’s position, not merely move you away from your own farm.

How to choose an objective
Think of lane objectives and secondary map objectives differently. Lane objectives help open the route toward the enemy base and, as the strategy guide describes, can provide Souls, map control, and extra slots. The Soul Urn and Mid-Boss are optional map objectives: they can help a team hold or reverse an advantage, but neither is the win condition.
Before committing to a structure, the Soul Urn, or Mid-Boss, weigh the following:

- Lane readiness: Is an allied Trooper wave far enough forward to support a structure attack?
- Team availability: Can nearby teammates join, or would the move leave another lane or objective undefended?
- Reward and exposure: Is the likely team benefit worth the time and risk of contesting the objective?
- Map pressure: Will the play set up a safer follow-up push, or leave an opening elsewhere?
These checks are a practical way to think about lane management, rotations, and map control—not a guarantee that one choice is always optimal. Exact objective timing and rewards are volatile, so use the current game state rather than relying on a fixed schedule.
What to expect from the current game
Valve’s Steam listing describes Deadlock as “a multiplayer game in early development” and says access is limited to friend invites via playtesters. That is the listing’s current status wording, not a promise about release timing; check the page for changes to access or availability.
Specific balance values and rules can shift during development. The Deadlock Wiki strategy page was last modified August 29, 2025, and a mechanics extract reports a Soul change on September 16, 2026. For that reason, this guide avoids fixed Soul values, objective timers, and reward amounts: confirm exact details in the build you are playing.
