If your character isn’t performing the correct actions when you move a Joy-Con, update the console and controller, reset the detached Joy-Con, then calibrate its motion controls in System Settings. Check the sport’s controller setup and test the Joy-Con in other motion-control software; if calibration fails or the problem follows the controller, Nintendo recommends service.
Update the console and Joy-Con first
Nintendo’s motion-control troubleshooting starts with updates. Install the latest system update, then check for Joy-Con controller updates before calibrating. Nintendo’s motion-control troubleshooting steps cover these checks.
Reset the detached Joy-Con
- Detach the Joy-Con from the console.
- Press the controller’s SYNC button once.
- Press another button on the Joy-Con to turn it on again.
Calibrate motion controls in System Settings
This is a console setting, not a calibration option inside Nintendo Switch Sports. Before starting, remove any strap or other accessory attached to the controller.
- On the original Nintendo Switch, open System Settings > Controllers and Sensors > Calibrate Motion Controls.
- Hold – or + on the Joy-Con you want to calibrate.
- Place the Joy-Con on a flat, stable surface with its control stick facing upward. Leave it still while calibration runs.
- When calibration finishes, select OK.

Check the game mode and controller setup
Nintendo Switch Sports uses different Joy-Con configurations depending on the sport. Confirm that you are holding and using the controller setup required for the activity. The game does not support Handheld Mode; Nintendo recommends TV Mode for the best play experience. See the Nintendo Switch Sports FAQ for the game’s guidance.
If the problem involves the Leg Strap, check that it is attached properly. Joy-Con 2 is not compatible with the Nintendo Switch Sports Leg Strap.

Find out whether the problem follows the Joy-Con
Try the controller in other software that supports motion controls. If it works there but not in Switch Sports, recheck the game’s controller setup and mode. If motion controls fail in other supported software too, or calibration will not complete, Nintendo says the affected Joy-Con needs service.
