Yes. You can play Nintendo Switch Sports offline with friends on one console: choose Play Locally and use compatible Joy-Con controllers for the sport you want to play. You do not need Nintendo Switch Online for this same-console local mode, according to Nintendo’s FAQ. Separate consoles can also play locally over a wired network, while remote online play requires a Nintendo Switch Online membership.
Choose the kind of multiplayer you mean

Play offline together on one console
- Launch Nintendo Switch Sports and choose Play Locally.
- Connect the compatible Joy-Con arrangement for your chosen sport and number of players.
- Play in TV Mode for the recommended experience. The game does not support Handheld Mode.
Nintendo lists paired Joy-Con, a single Joy-Con, and Joy-Con with the Leg Strap among supported configurations, depending on the sport. Pro Controllers are not compatible. Check the game’s controller and play-mode FAQ before buying extra controllers: the right setup varies by sport.
Use LAN Play for separate consoles in the same place
Nintendo also documents LAN Play, which lets people on separate consoles play over a wired local network. It is local multiplayer, but it is not the same as sharing one console and does require network equipment.
- Connect each console to the same wired router using Ethernet. A USB LAN adapter is needed if a console’s dock does not have a built-in LAN port.
- Make sure each console has Nintendo Switch Sports, in physical or download form, and a display.
- Have one player create a room; players on the other consoles join it.
Nintendo’s LAN Play instructions allow up to four consoles, with up to two players per console and eight players total. If the router does not have enough LAN ports, Nintendo says a network switch can be added. The guide also names a licensed HORI Dual USB PlayStand as an example for connecting a USB LAN adapter when setting up LAN on a Switch Lite.

Play with friends online from different locations
For remote play, Nintendo states: “An active Nintendo Switch Online membership is required to play Nintendo Switch Sports online.” Voice chat in Play with Friends uses the Nintendo Switch Online smartphone app and also requires membership. Nintendo says Nintendo Accounts belonging to children under 13 cannot use that voice chat. Details are in Nintendo’s FAQ.

- Same console, no internet play: choose Play Locally and prepare compatible Joy-Con.
- Separate consoles, same room: use the wired LAN setup, with the game and a display for every console.
- Remote friends: use online play and make sure the required Nintendo Switch Online membership is active.
- Sport-specific setup: do not assume every sport has the same controller configuration or player limit. Nintendo’s cited FAQ does not give a complete sport-by-sport local player-limit table, and its LAN guide says available sports depend on how many players have joined.
